Just for kicks you can take a look at this system I did for a friend which is why there is two 5770. He just needed quad monitor setup for stocks and trading and it was under 1.1K after everything.
Newegg.com - Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 2MB Cache SATA DVD Burner with LightScribe LightScribe Support - CD / DVD Burners (works)
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive (works)
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards (easy to use for me, and great experience with them)
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100284VXL Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards ( two for quad, 1 of them runs max for CoD Mw2 isnt saying much but ya)
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650HX 650W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies ( Must get quality PSU or else everything is down the drain)
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Desktop Memory ( these look ugly if you look at the mobo once everything is done)
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Heka 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops ( 3.0Ghz solid with extra core unlocked. :) )
Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks ( never use stock coolers even for stock speeds)
Newegg.com - LIAN LI PC-A05NB Black Aluminum ATX Mini Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases ( not for gaming, but my friend just does stocks and such)
All of those for 1.1k While he didn't really need 5750's only card with dual DVI that seemed good. He also added a SSD but thats after the fact.
Its also fun getting all the stuff, it feels like holidays but in February at the time when I built this for him. There might be cheaper builds and you could cheap out the cases and or cut off some stuff, never PSU though.
You said with a coupe grand and I did that for a grand or so. No monitors thats another thing.
Looks manies considering your request...you'll have the choice to guide you in your future acquiring.
I have own only laptops since ten years now...I do find interresting reading either for desktop manner...but i don't think i'll build one someday by my own. Looks complicated when arrives the time to choose the right cooler!
For building laptops on your own you can always command a special customize kind. I think Lenovo have done it for photographers?!?

ehhh personally i don't wouldn't be to concerned with the warranty on a desktop but thats mostly because of the strict limitations on what you can and cannot do without voiding your warranty. no need to pay extra for something they won't let me use because i decided to add a few upgrades.
It was for a friend in his 40+ who does stocks, trading spaming emails about products to friends(>_>). I am not about to use those dam LG burners though. He needed quad monitors not to game lol. Crossfire kills the quad monitor setup if enabled. But thanks for correcting that if someone wants to use it for gaming. It runs pretty fast and quiet and its windows score is actually high. I think the HD slowed him down to on the windows score 5.9. now that he has a SSD it fly's more than my own computer
For anything except gaming its fine. LG burners are cheap and fine and they don't have bluebird. The best gaming PC's are those you don't install anything on, just games, drivers and benchmarks along with copy protection apps.
bluebird, the pain of them. I don't like there customer support despite me using there monitors but just not cost effective to switch them atm.
I haven't used them recently but awhile back it sure wasn't enjoyable. I had to get the bad batch of drives with it. I will try it out sometime later though.
