What if Apple sold their operating system to run on any PC? That would make them a more affordable option and true competition for Micosoft.
As for Microsoft building hardware..not going to happen, they lost a whole load of cash with the first Xbox and then with teh RROD on the 360's they took ages to break even.
I do believe that more people will be switching to Linux in the next few years especially when Google OS is based on it. Smart phones, netbooks and servers all run on Linux, like with Apple you do not need antivirus, it's FREE easy to install and use and there is a distro (Version) for just about every bodies needs.

Well you can run OSX on most Intel machines. It's just that we, the third party are responsible for compatibility.

Apple are a hardware manufacturer that include an embedded OS in the form of OSX. They are not realy a software company. I'm not sure of the actual figures but I believe that if it was not for the iPod revolution apple would probably be a part of the history of personal computing, by now. Steve Jobs himself has described apple as a multimedia company rather than a computer company

Microsoft are a true software based company who have toyed with hardware, in an attemp to broaden their markets. Whilst Microsoft has the skills to produce an operating system that is compatible with the majority of hardware, they do not have the skills to compete in the hardware market. The same applies for Apple in the software area.

Too much diversification by either would I believe lead to a "jack of all trades master of none" scenario, which would be bad for the industry and the users

Apple is making the same mistake with computers that they are with their phones. I like the iPhone, but Google's strategy is a lot smarter. They build relationships with hardware manufacturers, splitting costs and expanding themselves. People love OSX but no one should have to buy an overpriced piece of hardware to that's tied to it.
