If you use & know Windows 7, you can more than likely answer Vista threads.

Windows 7 is a wiser but younger sibling of Vista; XP is a very distant cousin to both.

If not for "Windows 7" name, I would think Windows 7 was destined to be Vista SP3 or SP4. There are very subtle differences between Windows 7 and Vista -- to the average user, anyway.

I can't find the thread now but wasn't there a guy suggesting merging the forums? I'm not for or against. But with the rate of traffic on Vista, it may be inevitable. By the time Windows 7 SP1 is being installed by everyone, Vista may be relegated to sub-forum status.
Perhaps when the Seven posts die down after it's been around awhile. But as it is now, I only envision chaos for that merger, don't you?

Those subtle differences are things like a more responsive OS as well as seeing faster default startups and shutdowns/restarts with the implementation of the MinWin kernel. Small differences like gadgets running on the desktop and no sidebar as well as no longer seeing Windows Mail are some of the changes to consider.

Once the new build is together the present build will likely see Vista HP go back and a look over of the 64bit Vista Ultimate since this will be onhand a reference even possible test machine later. Of course I could always put Vista back on VM for a reference install for things like reviewing the registry, desktop settings, etc..

Are they still "word for word must be ontopic" requiring at TSF? TVF and SF have been far more friendly over other places where a simple question to an OP like "what will you be using the second drive for?" ends up seeing: "You are offtopic!" blah blah blah!

SF grew tremendously since it was started upon the news that the 7 beta builds would be available to the public followed by the RCs. For most still running Vista and/or XP going with 7 at this time many questions are being answered here explaining the most experienced users being drawn here. Between SF and being an admin on another forum I'll have to get over to TVF a little more often I guess!

Greeeeeat, I don't want any part of that. I come here to help people out, not to be dissed by the staff for trying to do just that. No thanks, I'll stay right here at SF. This place rocks!

Very true. The fundamentals are the same as are most of the techniques / tips.

Aside from some differing navigation / layout issues, there isn't too much that isn't equally applicable to both Seven and Vista.

No problems mate. The vast majority of us are happy to pass on what we've either discovered ourselves, or learnt from others.

Speaking of on topic, did you see the moon last night?

As long as the OP has their question answered (which happens most of the time), going off topic is par for the course here :)

For those purchasing new systems or those that can afford to upgrade from Vista, I agree on "there's no reason to use Vista". However, there are millions out there running Vista and many need help.

I agree with smarteye's assessment 100%. Those of us that ran Vista had a rather seamless transition to Windows 7. Those running XP expecting to run Windows 7 on the XP-era hardware have the same complaints as those that upgraded their XP systems to Vista. I don't know about all else here, but every Vista system that I/ family/ friends, etc... own now run Windows 7 and experience no issues whatsoever. Then again I am a fan of Vista and never had any problems with it, either.

Not at all. Windows 7 retains most of Vista's features and functionality, but does so more eloquently. Look at the tutorials in Vistax64 and the tutorials here at Seven Forums - most are the same.

As I mentioned, the subtle differences are not generally noticeable to the average user. When Windows 7 Beta came out, I immediately installed it on 2 systems here. When family or friends came by and used the Windows 7 Beta systems, they were shocked to learn that it was not Vista - but Windows 7.

In my TSF Microsoft Support Forums there is no such thing as "off topic". A thread can go in any direction so long as it is the same system we are dealing with. An OP can ask any question they like and often do.

I have never 'dissed' anyone for any question they have asked, specifically in BSOD threads, which can go in any direction very quickly.

Asking a question is the way we learn and I do not discourage it in any manner.

I agree that the most important part of what we do is to help provide an OP with a solution.

However, where BSOD threads are concerned, I started aggressively taking on Vista BSOD threads in Feb 2008. My first Windows 7 BSOD thread was before Windows 7 beta came out. TSF has been a leader in BSOD cases where the actual dumps were processed.

I find it comforting and certainly encouraging knowing that those that can run kernel dumps and analyze the output post both here at SF, VF and at TSF. The concentration of such talent working together reaches a wider user base and can only lead to additional solved threads in the future.

TSF is the very first tech forum that I ever posted to - post #2 was made the first week of January 2008; I joined the MS Support Tec Team in Feb 2008; Moderator, MS Support by June 2008. Before getting into the depths of Vista, I was in Corporate Finance, Accounting Policy, etc... and needed a change. I saw my very 1st BSOD in late 2007 and had never gone behind a Windows Desktop before late 2007. All I have learned has been through Q & A with OPs and a ton of in depth system investigation, bringing me to where I am today.

Please know that I was not suggesting in the least that anyone go to TSF to help users by posting the links that I did. Instead, it was to simply show the very close relationship between the Windows 7 OS & the Vista OS as we group the two under a single forum at TSF. I believe it is safe to assume that between SF & TSF that we together handle the vast bulk of BSOD threads anywhere found.

My apologies if my intentions were misconstrued.

It's starting to get that ghost town feel is my point. Not if we should do this or do that. If nobody posts questions, it's tough to answer them.

On another board I've been on a few years the topics are circumscribed because the subject of the board is video. So once threatened they can't even talk about some tool that has legitimate uses but may be used for piracy. After a while most of the posts are trolls trying to provoke answers to questions about such tools. It's too bad because it's a good board. But it's getting ghost towned fast.

edit: btw I still use the Vista64 SP1 my HP machine came with. It runs smooth so I see no reason to fix what isn't broken. The Superbar has some cool features but since I use several flavors of Windows I try to set stuff up so it works similar on them all. I don't want to have to think about how I do something or which folder it's in on this system or that system. Libraries I only use by accident since I make a 'download' folder on every Windows I've had since Win95. I can't be bothered with the shifts and juggles. It's a distraction.

But I bet there's a lot of people who think it's declasse to use Vista. It's bound to dwindle. Even if it works well since the SPs it's not the latest, for one thing.

I still log on to Vistax64 everyday, sometimes it will be 2 or 3 times depending on other things, in fact I think I've got a couple of replies to posts in there today.

I used Vista and liked it but then the machine I had came with it so I didn't have any problems, I still have it installed in a dual boot with Windows 7 but admit never go into it now unless it's to bring it up to date.

I'll still try and help in there for as long as I can and when I can.
