I see a problem with a joy stick causing over compinsation or not enough as there wont be any feedback from the road.

You could use a force-feedback Joystick. GTA just got way more fun.

how long do you think it is before people forget they are actually driving a real car and not playing GTA?

I don't think I'd want to drive it, looks pretty awkward to me.

While I'm sure I could learn to drive with a joystick, I wouldn't want it on the console. On a long trip I need to be able to change hands/hand positions to keep from getting cramps. Also to turn the radio/heat/air on or off you have to either reach over with your left hand or let go of the "wheel". All around bad design IMHO. If you want to use a joystick it needs to be where the wheel was, like in a jet fighter or the old biplanes.

Don't know how practical it is, but might be fun to be on the design team.
