Windows 7: Why I want a manual transmission car....

+1 manual transmission

I drive a VW Jetta TDI. The mpg is fantastic in an automatic, but it's even better with the stick (32+ city, 45+ highway.) Also, I just like rowing through the gears.

Some of the newer Common Rail Turbo Diesels sold in Europe get 50 and 60MpG - and even better with the VW DSG automatic (that's an electronic double clutch automatic). But those Turbo Diesels are not sold in the US because there is no diesel fuel that meets the required specifications (sulfur and water content).
60 to 70% of all passenger cars in Europe are Turbo Diesel now - even big Mercedes and BMWs. The fuel efficiency is phenomenal apart from the engines lasting a lot longer than a gas engine. And what is most amazing is that they are quieter than gas engines. The torque is far superior to a gas engine too (a 2 litre turbo diesel equals to about a 5 litre gas V8). That would be ideal for the big vans, SUVs and pickups. But without the right fuel, it is a no-go.
The Jetta that you have is still the old pump/injector technology - a little too noisy for my taste.

My F-350 diesel is noisy; but I love the sound of a diesel.

Yup, I have an older 2006 Jetta with the PD engine. Starting in 2009, you could get CRD engines over here. We're seriously considering upgrading to a new Jetta Sport Wagon TDI in a year or two.

As for noise, most people have no idea that they're riding in a diesel when they step into my car. If you know what to listen to for (typical diesel clatter or turbo whistle), then you can hear it.

I am a total diesel convert, btw.
