    Carl,
    Many more earthquakes are reported than in the past. This is because of the vast improvement in instrumentation & communications, rather than an increase in the number of earthquakes.

    Refer the link to see where quakes have been reported in Australia thus far in 2010..

    The only actual "ramp up" is in the news reporting...

    Earquakes are hot. Maybe natural disasters of all kinds are hot in the news lately becuase of all the natural disaster movies as of late, global warming fear, etc. News follows trends (including aping what other people think is news, news or not). They tell you what they think you want to hear on subjects they think you want to know about more than actually giving "good information" in nearly every case.
