I don't know whether this has already been mentioned but I am impressed and humbled by the dignity and national pride of the Japanese people.
When disasters have occurred elsewhere there has often been panic, violence and looting. So far I have seen none of this in news reports on this tragedy.
The self control, self respect and stoicism of those affected is astonishing and inspiring.

    +1 John
No looting, violence or panic as with other disasters. Not even in Christ Church did I see any of this.

Yet here in the US we see it all the time caused by court rulings, drive-by-shootings, some racial factor and then throw in disasters. It is really embarrassing to say the least about our behavior.
So I am doing my share and self control by donating to the Red Cross/Japan where need help!

Absolutely. It says a huge amount for their resilience. Look at what they accomplished in a mere 65 years from the total devastation of WW2 to be the worlds 2nd/3rd largest economy - quite outstanding. If anyone can recover from this, you bet the Japanese will.

I hope Japan will recover from this devastation. They have all the expertise in nuclear technology.

"Apparently acting on this piece of sarcastic wisdom, the US has deployed four nuclear plants near the Ring of Fire faultline, including two active ones in my home state of California"

Listen to the sound of the quake

Ever wonder what the fourth-largest recorded earthquake since 1900 sounds like? The Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics (LAB) has posted the eerie sound online. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), a network of underground observatories more than a thousand meters below sea level, made the chilling recording as the quake struck.

According to Science Daily, the sounds of Japan's 9.0-magnitude quake "have been accelerated 16 times so that they can be audible to human ears." The red and yellow colors on the spectogram represent the most intense parts of the quake.

Also, the quake and all it's aftershocks in an image that shows the seismic activity off the coast of Japan since March 9, the day a 7.2 quake occurred off the coast of Japan. The morning of March 11 shows the massive quake and its aftershocks, and then the seismic activity slowly subsides. But all in all, the region has suffered 428 earthquakes since March 9, even though many were too far or too small to be felt on land.

I felt that one in Virginia here in east central NYS.
Apparently there is a nuclear plant in Virginia built right near or on a fault line......what genius is responsible for that?
