As a person that loaths apple with every fiber of my being, I make the announcement that the iPad is the single greatest computing device ever invented in the personal computing space ever.

Course, like the iPod Touch and the iPhone there will be /serious/ long term user/reliability issues which are the main problems I have with apple's stuff

It will last AT MOST 2 years before you have to buy a new one due to dead batter/broken switch etc. The synching software WILL destroy your data a tleast once in that time as well. Don't keep anything you want to keep permanetly on it.

And you almost HAVE to jail break it to turn it into a usable device (By default even this thing won't let you run more than one app at a time. Leave it to apple to take a great multitasking OS on a resonably powerful cpu and turn it into a single tasking user experience 9.9)

If only the system were open (And in this case, even Windows qualifies as being "open" compared to Apple's locked down OS), it would not only be the greatest computing device ever made, but it would sell 100 times as many...

But anyway... I will probably hate myself forever but I'm thinking of asking for one for my B.D. as well That is how great this thing really is if you get your hands on one for 5 minutes

Although I am what one may classify as an "Apple Fanboy", the exact opposite of you, I agree almost completely with what you just said.

Although by Apple's own admission they did say they were late to the party with Multi Tasking but they said they'd do it better and more efficiently than anyone else and in my (somewhat bias) mind that makes the wait worth it.

I have also lost all the stuff on my iPhone averaging at least once every six weeks (no big loss it's all backed up though) but that is mainly because of me pushing my iPhone to the limits of what it can handle (and messing about with some system files but that's beside the point).

And in terms of only lasting 2 years... those of us with weaker minds/butter fingers will have to upgrade stuff more often, but fortunately I fall into neither category (although I am looking to upgrade my MacBook sometime in the next 18 months).

I'll go out on a limb and speculate on what his answer would be

#1) Because of the Apple holier than thou attitude
#2) The trendiness of the products.
#3) The "snootiness" of many of the end users of the products

I'm not historically an apple fan...although I don't have them either. From a computing standpoint, I've never felt that I get enough bang for the buck to make the investment. I find the hardware/software too locked down, not much to choose from at a hardware level and the interface of OS X to just be bland. I honestly don't experience that many problems maintaining my Windows computers....so I don't need the perceived ease of use with the Apple computer.

Coming from years and years of experience in the pc, windows and linux world...I honestly don't find Apple products to be very intuitive and easy to use. My wife has an iPhone and compared to my blackberry I find it hard to navigate. When she switched from one pc to another in the house, moving iTunes was a genuine pain in the butt. I borrowed a macbook from work recently and took it home for a while and loaded OS X and got my feet wet really using the product...and in the end....I just found that it wasn't anything to write home about.

It's all about what you're used to.

I try to get a broad a taste of technology as possible (but installing programs on Linux is still beyond me).

A couple of people in my family use Blackberries and I can navigate them better than they can.

My best friend uses Android and although being a bit lombersome it's a good Phone OS (apart from the operating system itself being a process that shuts itself down after 10 minutes of inactivity or so).

I personally use an iPhone and can make it do virtually everything my home PC can (bar high end gaming).

A couple of my other friends use WinMo 5 and 6... I don't like it but I can use it.

I always only ran Windows for a long time before I got into IT and now I run Mac, Windows (XP, Vista, Seven and Server 2008 R2) and the odd Linux distro just for a bit of fun and can use Windows and Mac just as intuitively as each other.

I'm sure if I actually sat down and learnt how to use Linux I would stop despising it for being 'too technical'.

Well, I've been using OS X since the day it came out and it's never crashed. it's very stable.

And Apple hardware isn't locked down. I have Windows 7 Professional installed alongside OS X on a MacBook. Just because you can't install any app you want on an iPhone doesn't mean it's locked down.

And how is an iPhone hard to navigate? I can't imagine things getting any simpler than icons, which is what Windows and Linux use, too. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Apple fanboy, even though I've used them since the Apple // days. I just get confused when people say the things they do about Apple, like what you just said his response might be.

First this is all just my opinion, please feel free to ask questions or comment if you feel I have bad information to base these opinions on.

I agree with #1, this is my main peev with Apple. For the past 4 Years(?), I have seen nothing but attack ads from Apple.

#2, I dont think the trendiness or appeal to their products is any reason to hate Apple. Most PC's are going this route - no more Biege Boxes. Cases and Laptops are better designed with the a focus on the look and feel of the product.

#3, I dont think a few bad apples (pun intended) should make Apple a hated company.

That said, I too hate apple (lol not really, but a little) .... I guess it's still mainly #1 reason. I just dont get it. most of the ads sling mud or make fun of PC's. Ok enough fun...

I haven't seen the iPad yet. A friend at work has one and I am interested in seeing it. I can imagine its pretty smooth. Apple makes good products, but they limit functionality to suite a specific feel. And i can agree with a few things, but some of the features I would have liked to see (I feel) were left out on purpose.

Over here in the UK there were so few Mac VS PC ads that no one batted an eyelid towards them (and besides if you cast David Mitchell as PC it's more than justified to attack him ), I just found them funny and the US ones are still funny.

I guess having less reason for hating Apple is why I'm sitting on the fence with both OSs, besides most people don't hate Apple, I mean how many people do you know who still call their Music player an MP3 Player?

Well, I have an MP3 Player, so I guess there is at least one.

I dont really hate Apple. I dont like them though for a few reasons. As for the ads: they are funny, but people take them as the truth and they are far from it.

I can say I have both OS's in my house. The MBP (snow Leapord) has just as many issues as my Asus (win7) laptop: very few. :)
