    LPT .. lets not worry about your XP machine until you have downloaded and burned Ubuntu...Once you have done that, let us know and we'll walk you through the rest!

    Yes those will work, after it's done downloading right click the file on the desktop and select "Burn Disk Image" then in the next window select "Burn" click the snips below to enlarge.

    Barefoot,
    The idea was to disconnect the desktop which has the problems from the internet.

    Remember she has a problem with the XP desktop. Personally, I think she is better off fixing that problem rather than putting a 2nd OS on the desktop and still having the problem.

    Lets take care of her primary problem before we start talking about imaging ... it cuts down on the confusion..

    We are not suggesting that Ubuntu be installed... but to use the Live CD option to back up any files...

    M'Lady;

    Here is a screen shot of the "Safe Mode". You get to "Safe Mode" by tapping the F8 key while booting. It sounded like, from your eailer description, the SB tech had you attempt the "Last Known Good Configuration" utility. If it works, it will restore XP to a point before you removed any programs. If it was already tried and / or did not work, then reinstalling XP may be your only option.
