LPT... I would download a copy of Ubuntu, burn as an image file and boot from the cd.... Choose the "Try Ubuntu without making any changes to my pc" ... this will load ubuntu without actually installing it... You will then be able to backup your files to cd's, then proceed with a reinstall of Windows XP... be sure to download the necessary drivers and burn them to a cd as well... Let us know if you need help... Good Luck!
    Twes.. hello..
I can go download the program you have mentioned ....
keep in mind.. I'm having to use my Windows 7 to comminicate with you.
I have my drivers on a RED CD that came with my Windows XP.. will that work for the drivers needed ?

    Thank you for your help.

Do you have Win XP install CD? (Not the Gateway Recovery disk as this a Norton Ghost Disk)
    Hi..
Here is what I do have..this came with my desktop Windows XP when I purchased it from Gateway....Shopping Network...HSN ..everything came installed as it arrived.
Operating System..windows XP-ProfessionalMedia Center.. 11/02(near the hole on the CD).. looks like the date I bought this pc.
    this is on the CD
    Version1.0..For distrubution only..with a new GatewayPC

    ALSO:
    A Red CD.. Drivers......: Gateway

Those are the 2 CD's that came with my laptop.
    Thanks..
    Excellent.

However, I admit to some confusion.

    You have a desktop.
    You have a laptop.
    Is this correct?

    The desktop works correctly? Yes/No
    The laptop works correctly? Yes/No

I know you have already supplied much good information, however, I'm trying to isolate your problem/problems.

Let's solve Microsoft problems with Microsoft software.

Lets get one thing straight. Have you a combined modem/router and is your PC connected to the roiuter by a ethernet cable? Have you seen a screen giving you a choice of booting ie can you get into Safe Mode?
Mitchell.. YES I do.. have seperate modem AND router.. it's totally secured.. the guys here helped me get this accomplished.. in a HomeNetwork. on this laptop.. using Windows 7. ..

Yes the Desktop is connected to the router by ethernet cable... yellow
    Yes last night...
I did see the Safe Mode Screen on the Desktop.. it's BLACK with white writing.
I'm almost sure that was the Safe Mode screen.

    Many thanks. I was confused.

So we have an XP SP3 desktop which does not function correctly.

Understandably, she is in a little bit of a panic-I would be too.

Now, forgetting all of the router stuff and disconnected from the internet--What is the problem?

I'm trying to understand the problem.

Yes! You have half the battle won ... continue with the download of ubuntu and backup the files that you need... Remember that you will need to reinstall all of your programs when you are finished, but your problem will be fixed... you are almost there!!
