Advocatus diaboli here, but overclocked AMD chips are great for gaming too.

I wish I had the link (found randomly), but iirc, it was from one of the 'better and less unbiased' sites who do reviews.

One particular benchmark suite showed that an OC'ed 750 @ 4.0ghz had higher overall frames, but some OC'ed AMD chips actually managed better average minimum frame rates on quite a few titles. (quite significant too in some cases )

However, feel free to take that with a grain of salt as I don't have the link nor recall any of the relevant of the parameters / settings / titles involved.

(But for those who know me on these forums - I have zero inclination to 'make things up'. I'll post the link if I manage to find it again)

However...

Help me out here... how badass is that i7 of yours?
It does the job quite nicely indeed. It's also great for non-gaming tasks as well

(BTW, no there is no real discenrnaible difference between only having 4 physical cores and 4 physical + hyperthreading when overclocked, so for the OPS's sake - not having hyperthreading is not a deal breaker)

That's one thing that always annoys me: review sites that bother to go through a week's worth of testing, yet only post the max fps, as if that were the thing that most concerns gamers. I want min fps info, above and beyond anything else.

X-bit Labs, generally speaking, is decent about providing that, but, they could be better.

**edit**

Also, I never disputed the fact that you can have a great gaming experience with AMD cpu's, overclocked or not.

Ditto. I could care less if GAME X Y Z can do X amount of max FPS. It's the average and minimum where it's at.

Oh I know you didn't... sorry I didn't clairify, that last bit was for the OP should he opt to go that way. I've pushed the i5 hard, I realize that, but AMD is a good choice too.

I think you've been given alot of info throughout this thread, and not to take away from any of it as it's been spot on, I think it would be convenient for you to pull info from boards that exist specifically for your quest and a step further, to push hardware. I suggest getting some coffee and getting cozy with some as they're all great communities...

I'll try to keep this short for your sake but here's my 2 tips above all else...

1) Research
2) PSU (this is the master link! if this goes, all is liable to go. If you don't skimp in one category, choose this...)
3) See 1

Edit:
If this was bad mannered to link out to other forums, my appologies. Just trying to point OP to more resources for research.

Napolean said, "Never interfere with your enemy while he is in the process of destroying himself."

@Smarteyeball: gentlemen grant each other carte blanche integrity; speaking only for myself, you do not have to provide a source for your claim.

@FlaTLin3D: as you see, folks get rather, well . . . passionate about their opinions; there are manifold "sides" to any issue. As far as gaming is concerned, I would not be able to differentiate from system A and system B in the real world (v. benchmarking) given systems that contained respectable components; I wonder if anyone here would claim they can.

In the end, I have what I have for my reasons which, I have said, are not germane to this thread, per se. I, as others, have, and will continue to extol the virtue of your researching the issue and deciding what's best for you.

Oscar Wilde lamented, "My great mistake, the fault for which I can never forgive myself, is that one day I ceased my obstinate pursuit of my own individuality." My friend enjoy the Sims on the system of your choice.

Do post back if you have any questions about specific components; I will be delighted to offer my $0.04 worth.

Wow...

To review: you get busted insulting other forum members, it's demonstrated that you're hypocritical in terms of your own advice, and you get called out for fabricating your own facts, and the best you can muster in 24 hours is... Napoleon and Oscar Wilde?

Since you're such a fan of great literature, I've got something you might enjoy reading?

No matter how cleverly you may think you're masking the insults, an insult is still an insult; thinking you can circumvent the forum's rules by attempting to disguise them is not only an insult to me, but to the intelligence of everyone on these boards.

Have a good day, sir.

+1. Most decent motherboards have great on board sound software these days so unless you're a hi fi buff or intend running an elaborate surround sound system I wouldn't bother spending on one
