Windows 7: Keep Linux or back to XP?

Updating it is the problem...

I think that most people simply turn that off. Expecially when it wants to update most every single day on default settings for most distros

Ubuntu checks every 10 days for updates, but you can set them up to auto-install just like windows if that is your wish. It is no different from your virus db updating every day however.
