Windows 7: Spelling lessons needed...apparently

Here in Germany you see quite often misspelled words and sentences as a result of word by word translation. One I noticed last week was a sign on the wall above a trash bin in a "Rasthof", a roadside service area (literally "Rest yard").

German word for waste is "Abfall", which is a combination of a preposition "ab", meaning off, away, from etc., and noun "Fall", meaning fall as in free fall, or case as in this case etc.. It really has a lot of different meanings, but as I mentioned, together with preposition "ab" it means waste.

So the sign said in German Abfall, and underneath in English the translation: Falling off

Luckily people tend to recognize trash bins, so maybe the sign is unnecessary...

Another sign of the times... The best "teachers" are supposed to be the parents! School is supposed to "take further" the initial education a person is supposed to have been taught at home. My mom was the first "teacher" who taught me to count my change--school helped me to do it faster.

Right on the head

In my place we have a saying that defines priorities like,
Mata Pita Guru Deivam

Mata or mother is the one we hold in the highest esteem and gets our unreserved love and affection. Childbirth being what it is, there is a lot more to the relationship than just an umbilical cord.

Pita or father is in a commanding position in the initial stages of our lives and remains an inspiration and pivot around which the family revolves.

Guru or teacher shapes us and molds us till we are ready for this world. Picking up all the survival skills and more from them, we venture out of our comfort zones and conquer the world. It's no wonder they are right up there on the respect scale along with our parents.

And Deivam is God

Summing it all up,
MATA introduces us to this world by giving us this birth and introduces us to our PITA who provides the food and the shelter for this physical body and introduces us to the GURU who provides the food for the mind and the soul and thereby introduces us to the GOD
