Yeah..I thought about that as well but I'm still not sure how well Linux is suited to touch screens. I'll be keen to see what Google's Android tablet is like if/when it's released.

If you know me, have read my posts, etc, you should know that I am a staunch Microsoft supporter and a dedicated opponent of Apple. The iPhone and the iPad are good enough to get me hooked on them, and that is saying something, as normally I reject Apple products without a second thought.

There is nothing I hate more than talking to people who don't want to listen, so I'm only going to put up a highly detailed explanation if someone asks me for it. For now, I'll just say that IMO the iPad is great, and anyone on the fence should be sure to hear BOTH sides of the debate before making a decision.

I think you echo my sentiments exactly... I've made it my goal to spread the anti-gospel of Apple, until this. I gave having an ipad a chance, and it's really wowed me. I used my primary i7 win 7 rig to transcode 500 hours of video yesterday, which nobody will claim an ipad can do, but for cool apps and functional browsing with email... well I think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread.

Hey, my friend came over yesterday (and his family) and he brought over his iPad. He is a major Apple fanboy, which really amuses me, but I have to say that it is pretty cool.

My complaints with it were:
-Same home button
-EXACT same UI. They totally could have made it a little bigger and more finger friendly
-Smooth rounded body. This was typical Apple, but pure stupid. If you set it down to type, it rocked when you hit the edge of it (rounded back). If you held it, it would slip (especially if you get sweaty hands) and possibly fall. Seems like they would have been better with a rounded square design.

Other than that, I really, REALLY like the concept of it. Just not by Apple.

My complaint would be the iPad is the answer to a problem that didn't exist. We have desktops, laptops, netbooks. I guess it's Apples answer to the netbook but I don't know, it seems pointless.

I see them plugging HD videos on it, why would anybody want to watch an HD video on a screen that size? Then there's games, seen an ad for Mirror's Edge, again, who would want to play a side scrolling version of Mirror's Edge when you could hop on the computer and play it for real.

I can understand it on a phone for long journeys which is handy because it's compact, but iPad, meh, not for me.

Then there's just the fact that for most Apple is just a brand name to be seen with. I know so many people who want Apple computers, "just 'cause." these being people who are pretty useless with computers but want an Apple just because of the name and how it looks.

I'm just bitter because I had like a 3rd generation iPod which broke and needed replaced on warranty 4 times.

I also hate touch screen, have a touch phone and hate every moment of using it. iPhone and so probably iPad touch is better but I still don't like it. Tech nearly as useless as 3DTV's, don't start me on 3D!

IMHO,

Why "hate"? I can only think one reason: ENVY.

The current OS with "smoothest" touch experience is iPhone OS, because Apple control the hardware and software aspects of it, they came up with probably the best touch screen sensitivity in the market today (there are several benchmarks about this issue, one using human finger, another using robot, same result). Combined with iPhone OS (now called iOS), the products literally delivers the best touch experience out there (Android is second best, but the distance between first and second is veeeerryyyyyy faaaaaaaaaaaaar). If you read about Android, because it uses JVM, the OS performance is waaaaaaaaaaaayyy below iOS, simply because it's already running on a weak hardware, then wraps the apps in a binary natural format (Java isn't exactly the cheetah of binary formats, ouch). If you see the slide animation on an iPhone/iPad switching between "pages" of apps, compare it with Google Nexus One (Snapdragon, 1Ghz SoC), the animation alone will show the contrast (Android running @30FPS, iOS @60FPS), the difference is just too great.

Not to mention the 3D hardware used by many Android hardware vendors, Snapdragon chipset is using a weaker GFX logic (the GFX part is embedded in the SoC it self) compared to iPad, waaaay weaker. The graphic library on Android is wrapped around Dalvik JVM engine, as a start, it's not fast, wrap it with JVM, it'll lose it's speed as much as 50%, maybe more, run it on a very weak CPU/GPU combination, disaster in the making... Android 2.2 a.k.a Froyo has increased Dalvik JVM performance to the magnitude of twice or triple the speed of the current stack... Honestly: it's still slow... Get rid of Dalvik JVM then maybe we can compare it directly side by side.

You can't even begin to imagine the performance tuning, the underlying concepts, the architecture, and many aspects of iOS, it's like comparing a F1 car to a street performance machine, finely tuned, all custom fabricated, very well balanced, highly calculated machinery to a basic machine bolted with performance components which sometimes carries excess baggage from it's limited basic architectural design...

Another aspect, if you look at the finished product, the way Apple's goods are superior in it's design, it's looks, the whole way of how it's put together, the fit and finish, it's a well thought, very fine piece of engineering. Nothing in the market can come close to Apple's products fit and finish. When 27" iMac got yellow tint, everyone cries foul, because looking at such well made product a yellow tint is BEYOND unacceptable. If the same thing happens to say BenQ monitor - it won't make any headlines...

Since it's Apple, then the word is be ENVY.

What makes me dislike it (strongly) is that APPLE made it. A more proprietary brand you cannot find (even more so than MS).
Now, if someone had come up with a really nice touch tablet computer and put a specialized LINUX os on it, I would jump on it.

Since it is Apple, it is not worth buying as it is crippled beyond ALL redemption.

I can definitely see this lime of thought. I got one as a gift, and ended up upgrading to the 3G...it's really functional for as much as I'm on the road. I've had to eat my words a bit on how much I despise apple stuff over how functional I've found this to be.

I get frustrated now with emetic apple hate. The app store is fluid and neat IMO
A few months and a lot of paid apps later...

I love reading books on my ipad, and love reading the news. Typing emails is somewhat better than my phone.

I can watch the Daily Show and things on Megavideo on my phone but not ipad -100000

The GPS in my iPad seems more accurate than my HD2 and EVO both.

Skype works well just sitting beside me in the truck talking to whoever, better than the EVO.

I've downloaded a lot of apps, the best one by far is Motion GPS HD. I took it hiking and it did a great job with maps I downloaded. A close second is documents to go.

The built in email client doesnt preview pics very well.

My screen is cracked into oblivion, however this is not apples fault, someone dropped my ipad.

iPad doesnt support AVRCP when using bluetooth headphones. That's really annoying.

I read a lot of patient charts walking through hospitals, and for that the iPad is amazing when they're in .pdf. Reading a multiple page .tiff file is impossible, as you can only ever see the first page.

There's still not an acceptable solution for me to use OneNote like note taking. MobileNoter is meh at best.

I find myself using my tablet PC again. The novelty of iPad has worn off, but for music, GPS, reading, and casual browsing it's an epic win, if you have a laptop already.
