How many millions being put off the internet?

There has to be millions of people being put off going on the internet at the moment because of so much 'scaremongering'. Over the last few months we have seen a large amount of incidents of security issues on various browsers and also with Adobe. Not only that, there are issues with Antiviral clients not covering all the Viri out there, so you could still be infected even though you have the best and most up to date AV client. And, last but not least we now have Law firms actively singling out IP addresses that may or may not have downloaded an illegal film/song/game. If I mention these problems to a potential newbie, the reply is continually 'not interested'
I am starting to wonder myself...'What's the point!'
I can safely say that come the time I get a letter from a Law firm saying give us £££, I will switch off and never bother again. Now for the wizards on this forum I probably expect you to say 'we love the internet that much we don't care!'. But, if the internet becomes just a place for the elite, I can't see a future for it!

    What's your view...?

The internet and peoples idea of it is a strange thing. My parents for example, every time they buy something off the internet there is some hoo-ha about putting in credit card details. They are scared stiff about the security of there details whilst entering them in to the site (even on very reputable sites). But as soon as they're back to regular browsing they don't care. Anything that pops up on screen they just click OK, YES, without a thought as to what it could be. So many times have I come on to their laptop to find about 3 new toolbars installed in browsers and all sorts of crapware on the system. So whilst they are aware of the obvious things like personal details, they take no notice of Antivirus or general net crap popping up.

As for downloading, I don't want to say to much as I'm not sure as to what I can and can't say on here.

My big gripe with the internet these days is the suppliers throttling connections.
