    The power is supplied by the receiver to power the LNB, so if you power off the receiver then there isn't anywhere else for the power to come from. The satellite is thousands of miles out in space so it can't supply power to the coax.

    So how does the receiver (box) get the signal from the Dish? Doesn't the coaxial outlet have to be powered up by the dish on the rooftop (which I have)/associated with it for my receiver to get channels?

    Again, the satellite receiver supplies power to the LNB on the dish thru the coax. There is a signal sent from the LNB back to the receiver that contains the video.

    Ok, so then I should have always just kept the receiver unplugged while doing this.
