And hey, you do need real HDD space to store VHDs on.
May I remind you that dynamic VHDs take up about 27kb of space when empty? Even on my smallest flash drive I could store a few hundred .
But empty VHDs don't provide any storage. If you're actually going to USE them, they have to be stored on a physical drive that possesses the amount of space you need.
Who uses HDDs theses days anyway, I mean come on .

I can see if you actually wanted to use them it would be a problem but I have an old 160GB Laptop HDD sitting in a Caddy doing nothing connected to my PC, just because I have it.

It's not used for anything because it's too small for backups and too slow for media, programs etc.

20 VHDs are good enough for me.

I can't make any sense at all out of that ... maybe it's a Mac user thing ...

I have VHDs (actually VirtualBox hard disks (VDIs)) running Windows XP, Vista, and 7 x86, for developer testing, but I don't keep any permanent data like that...

I use VirtualBox a lot, I even have VMs of W_7, Vista and 64-bit XP included in the main image I use to restore after I FUBAR the main system, so I don't have to reinstall them every time.

I don't think it's a Mac user thing; I think it's just me . Speaking of virtual drives, when I updated Virtual Box the other day it broke (and completely corrupted) my VHD to the point it's all gone and not coming back .

Luckily, the paranoid person I am, I backed up the entire thing onto my Server. Unfortunately to get it off the server I have to set up a new VHD .

As for the multitude of empty VHDs, well running a virtual server requires virtual storage . I have also found out that a virtual server is completely useless fo backing up Virtual PCs. I need to just uninstall VB for good!

Thanks, I was just about to update my own VB, now I won't!

Machine snapshots and VDI backups (I neglect the latter because, as I said, my VMs are expendable).

I may point out that the update did skip from when Sun still owned VB in March to the most recent version. I was avoiding Oracle because of the bugs which had been reported. It might just be the upgrade jump that broke it but I have no idea.

I've been using the Oracle versions just fine, but it's possible that you skipped too many version. Same reason why you can only perform an Upgrade Install from Vista to 7, and not from earlier Windows.

I was specifically trying to make the acronym usage confusing (in a completely friendly way). So thanks!
