wouldn't you want to tell us your preferences and what you watched first?
for now, most of the recommendations seems to be mainstream shonen i'll follow - Darker than Black, Soul Eater, Code Geass , Kure-nai and Fairy Tail.
Devil May Cry surprised me for a short yet good series to watch. Another one you should try is D. Gray-Man, very good series in my view. Most others I would say have already been mentioned here but I'll throw 'em out there.
Inuyasha
Inuyasha: The Final Act
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Code Geass (including R2)
Death Note
Eureka Seven
Claymore
Saiyuki
Ghost In The Shell (including 2nd Gig)
Trigun
Trinity Blood
Tokko
Those are a few but there's plenty more out there and this alone would take you a while. Some good stuff to get you started and some anime a bit lesser known but pretty good nonetheless.
If you like police and detective stuff, you'll like Detective Conan. I have many more but hum... yeah, they do not meet everyone's tastes XD
Urusei Yatsura the series, but as far as I've found available only in subtitled save for the 1st one released in English dubbed, consists of the first 4 episodes which is AKA "Those Obnoxious Aliens". (there are also 6 movies, available in English dubbed versions)
Wolf's Rain - (Used to be able to watch the entire series on YouTube, probably gone by now)
Tenchi Universe - series
Witch Hunter Robin - series
Steamboy (Movie)
Cowboy Bebop - series
My Neighbor Totoro (Movie mostly for kids, if you've never seen a living Cat-Bus before, this is worth a look)
Slayers - The Motion Picture
Hellsing - series (you can still find these on YouTube)
YouTube - Hellsing OVA episode 1 part 1
You can still find a good amount of anime on YouTube, although with the Tube Police on patrol, probably best to watch it/save it when you find it. It can be there the one day & gone the next
If you want the music to any of these or other Anime, check this site out:
http://downloads.khinsider.com/
(yes they are free d/l's)
(You also have the option to send Anime ring tones to your phone...also free I believe)
Edit: BTW....you can still catch some anime movies here...while the channel is up at least
