Apple the new world leader in software insecurity

Apple has displaced Oracle as the company with the most security vulnerabilities in its software, according to security company Secunia. Over the first half of 2010, Apple had more reported flaws than any other vendor. Microsoft retains its third-place spot. Secunia has tracked security vulnerabilities and issues advisories since 2002, producing periodic reports on the state of software. Together, the top ten vendors account for some 38% of all flaws reported.

Though this does not necessarily mean that Apple's software is the most insecure in practice—the report takes no consideration of the severity of the flaws—it points at a growing trend in the world of security flaws: the role of third-party software. Many of Apple's flaws are not in its operating system, Mac OS X, but rather in software like Safari, QuickTime, and iTunes. Vendors like Adobe (with Flash and Adobe Reader) and Oracle (with Java) are similarly responsible for many of the flaws being reported.

Everyone (except for Mac fanatics) already knows this.

I have a friend on Facebook that is so proud of her iMac. Recently she asked how she can burn a DVD on it though. So user friendly, eh? I told her that if she had Windows 7 she can just drag and drop a file to the DVD, simple and easy. She said that she loved her Mac though. I suggested putting Windows 7 on it. Her response was that she didn't want to get a virus because the guy at Best Buy told her that Macs are safer.

Why does anyone think that Best Buy employees give sound advice? They are there to sell product, nothing more.

Man, I was hoping it was in the OS. A cousin of mine married a Mac fanboy and this would have been something to get him with. Still, the report is interesting to read. So much for all the people that claim Mac is 100% secure from malware.

Tried to get a job at Best Buy once. I was over qualified. I knew the actual differences between an External and Internal Hard Drive.

    Something else for your friend.

    Where it all started............

Elk Cloner is one of the first known microcomputer viruses that spread "in the wild," i.e., outside the computer system or lab in which it was written.[citation needed] It was written around 1982 by a 15-year-old high school student named Rich Skrenta for Apple II systems....
