Hi I have a problem which has gotten worse over the last few days. I have a dell 730 xps with water cooling, the water cooling fan went out causing over heating and shut downs. I have a dual boot setup with 2-500 gig hard drives, Vista 32 Ulti and Win 7 Pro 64. I have a qx9650 extreme chip and 2 gtx 280 video cards, 8 gigs of Corsair Dominator ram and a Creative Titanium Pro sound card. Drivers were all updated. Everything was running pretty good after the inital install, a few freeze ups maybe while playing WOW, vista 32 does the same thing, occassionally. After dell repaired the watre cooling they also replaced the mother board, this ruined my dual boot setup and after talking with microsoft tech, they did a repair which fixed the dual boot problem. Then the freezes became more often. And can happen at anytime, sitting at desktop, gaming or surfing internet. My descent setup is now crap. Currently I used driver sweeper 2.1.0 and removed the nvidia display drivers, and am now running windows display driver 8.15.11.8593 5/14/09 WDDMV 1.1 and these didnt fix it either. Any help would be appreciated. Thx:cry:

Hi and welcome

We are going to need a ton more info before we can be of much use to you.

First thing we want to do is look in event viewer. Next time you freeze type eventvwr in search. goto the windows log>application tab. You want to look for errors ( they have red "X" in the left hand column). when you find them and you will, use the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search) to make screenshot and upload it using the attadchment icon( shaped like a paperclip) on the reply form

See Pics

Let us know if you need help with that

Problems like you are having should be handled by Dell support. Is there a reason you aren't using Dell support to fix this problem?

I know exactly how to fix this type of problem but some expertise on your part will be required to make the required bios adjustments.

Dell support takes hours and this upgrade was not through dell. I purchased a new hard drive and the Win 7 pro at Tiger Direct

Do you think it is drivers , nvidia, or what. I have Creative sound blaster titanium pro sound card and drivers, and setpoint and the G13 G15 board drivers, Mcafee Virus suite.
Vista 32 is still way more stable right now than Win7 Pro.

thanks for reminding me. It has to be hardware if it appears in both win 7 and vista. If it is a desktop I would be pulling off every piece of hardware except the essentials. Keyboard, mouse, monitor, mobo, one stick of ram, etc.

when this first started can you go back to that day on event viewer and look thru that day for errors

Which Nvidia board are you using? Providing this type of information will be required for further assistance. Motherboard = Dell is not a correct answer. 780i SLI or FTW, 790i digital, FTW,...I have no idea which. Also what PSU are you using for your SLI? It's not listed at all.

The Power supply is 1000 watt dell setup, the video cards are GTX280 x2 BFG Tech, QX9650 extreme chip, Corsair Dominator Ram 8 gigs, the MObo is a dell 790ultra SLI there is no other info on board. Sli is currently disabled.

Since several are having this same issue and the past 2 days NO issues while playing WOW, do you think the issue is OS? Right now I have the WIN 7 WVD video driver butit has done it with it. I disabled SLI and physX though.

Ok lately no freeze ups or just a rare one, havn't done anything, but now when on the vista 32 HD, when idle it freezes, the monitor shut off and it froze requiring the hard reset, it also does this on the Win 7 HD. Even during some occassions, [prior to the additional HD install with WIN 7 pro 64], while gaming get a lockup and the sound would be like stuck in a loop, requiring a hard reset. Could the sound card be an issue?, have the latest creative drivers? It also did htis with the original dell creative sound card. Lately, now vista will lock up when idle, what is it with this issue that so many seem to have. I have changed the profile to perfomance that didnt help.

Freezing During Idle

Ok I originally posted that I was getting the random freezing. You know, where the computer freezes and you can't do anything and have to do hard restart. I have a dual boot setup, 2 separate 500 gig HDs. One has Vista 32, the other Win 7 Pro 64. With Vista 32, the only problem I had was an occasional Lock up, sometimes gaming, and sometime surfing, where the Comp would freeze and usually the sound would be stuck in a loop, you would have to do A hard restart.
These were random and from as little as once a week to every few days. Seemed like it was maybe the sound card because the sound would be stuck in a loop. Well then I got the second hard drive with Win 7 pro 64 bit. Had the freezes like everyone else. Did the drivers on both, bios etc. Well the freezes have subsided for the most part, but a guaranteed freeze will come [only on the 64 bit] when the machine sits idle, I set the power to performance, but its like the machine is going to sleep or trying to go into sleep or screen saver mode or something and cant get out of it, or just doesn't switch to that mode. Only fix is a hard reset. Any ideas?
I think this is a win7 pro 64 problem, the freezes and now this issue, but who knows?

Oh ya I also get the explorer hang, not responding sometimes, especially if I like click and open it fast right after startup.

Serb, first lets turn off the sleep and hibernate settings: hit start and type power options and open that menu. Go to change plan settings, then change advanced settings. Where it says Hard Disk, set that to NEVER turn off, and where it says sleep, turn it to NEVER.

Does that have any effect?

Also, that is what I call a hardware freeze (caused by hardware, not software). I have a similar problem, very rarely. It could be a bad SATA cable or port on the motherboard.
