Hi,

I am looking for a bit of support with a BSD error I keep getting. This crash always seems to happen when I am using IE8.

I am running Win 7 64bit

Latest minidump file
HijackThis Log and
system xml file

I have seen a number of othe BSDs that appear similar, but not any that are the same, The message I get on the BSD is IRQL_GT_ZERO_SYSTEM_SERVICE.

I have asked MS for help, but the only thing they have suggested so far is that I run in SAFE_MODE, where everything seems to work, but is unusable and does not solve the issue.

If anyone has any ideas the input would be great. Also as the problem is intermittent, its a pain to try and resolve. This PC was running Windows XP 32 bit for 9 months before I installed Win7. So I do not think its hardware, but you never know.

If you need more info I'll be happy to provide it.

cheers,

Thanks for the responses.

I wonder how you can be so authoratative that its ZoneAlarm. If this is the case surely they will patch it. Again, why move away from Avast and start using MSE. Is MSE the only security profile one can use with MS OSes? Ive used ZA and avast for as long as I can remember and I have paid for ZA, therefore if we can show it is causing a problem, I can pass it back to ZA for resolution or a refund.

I have uploaded the contents of my minidump folder.

Anthony

You're getting 0x4a stop errors. I'd download and run Malwarebytes after updating it to latest definitions. See if it finds any malware and remove.

Other than that, yes, it seems to be caused by your version of ZA installed.

Code:
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: X64_RAISED_IRQL_FAULT_vsmon.exe_nt!KiSystemServiceExit+245

Perhaps update to the latest networking driver as well since that may be part or all of the cause in association with this.

Thanks for the quick response.
I ran Malwarebytes and it came up with only 1 issue and as far as I can see that was an update from HijackThis.
Today ZA has updates for 2010, so I have upgraded and will see what occurs over the next few days, if there are any other thoughts please let me know.

thanks
Anthony

Hi Anthony. . .

The foundation for my comments on Zone Alarm are based on history. I have seen Z/A bring down Vista systems since 2008 and now Windows 7 systems. . .

JC you get an award! Removing Zone Alarm did the trick. Windows Update is now working again. Many thanks!!

History dictates future behavior, patches or not.

I would suggest that you remove the Zone Alarm 2010 version or you will be back here for BSOD help again.

Hi JC,

I was not casting aspertions, it's just I have seen this sort of response many times before and sometimes its just sour grapes.

Considering your responses, I will uninstall ZA this evening and see what occurs. Many thanks for your time and patience.

Hi Anthony. . .

No worries... it is your system, you know it best and if you are able to get Z/A to properly function, then do so. I was in the same boat in last 2007 and refused to believe that N360/ NIS was causing problems in my then-Vista system. Didn't take much longer after that and the removal of N360/ NIS to make me a true believer!

I only "hit" ( ! ) you with the info in last post to show what others have gone through.

Good Luck to you.

Hi JCgriff2,

You seem to have gotten it about right. I've been running for 2 days without a problem. I am going to keep trying this week and if I get a problem. I'll repost. So far so good.

I've been on to ZA and they are willing to take the dump files and review, so if we prove its their fault, I'll point them to this thread.

Thanks again. Fingers crossed.

Hi Anthony -

I wish you well with Zone Alarm. Send them the full kernel dumps, if possible.

If system crash settings (startup and recovery settings) = "kernel memory dump", each BSOD will produce a full kernel dump - c:\windows\memory.dmp and a mini kernel dump - c:\windows\minidump

The full kernel can be 300MB or much more in size and is written over each time system BSODs. The mini kernels, as you know, have the date in the file name and are therefore preserved.

Sorry to diminish your hopes, but Zone Alarm thread here at SevenForums just ended. BSOD-free now for 1 week - post-Z/A removal.

You're not wrong. It's been working fine for a week now and it just appears to have tried to do an update and the computer froze and |I have had to remove ZA all over again. Looks like I won't be trying again.

cheers for what was very solid advice...

I truly am sorry to hear of the outcome here. I know what it is like to believe in a product, then to learn... Well, it is something you had to experience for yourself, like I had to - with NIS 2+ years ago.

Good Luck to you.
