Windows Freezes, no BSOD

I finally have my new system up and running, the problem is, it seems to randomly freeze - mouse locks up, keyboard can do nothing, but there is no BSOD, the page I am on (whether it be desktop or internet) just stays frozen.

Added to this, I cannot install anymore windows updates - the first bunch were installed fine, but the 8 remaining all fail with error (800D0100 or something like that -at work so cannot see)

Oddly, the freezing seems to happen when at desktop, internet or even when windows is loading - once I am in a game and playing I seem to go without any problems.

Finally, I had issues installing the latest ATI drivers (10.3) the display drivers would not install and I had to use the 10.2.

I have a sneaky suspicion my Video card may be involved in the freezing issues - I always kept away from ATI in the past, this is the first time I have used one in a long time and it already having given me issues with downloading its display drivers has me wary.

Sony Dual Layer DVD Drive
500Gb Hard drive
750W Powercool PC750UM, Modular
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Unfortunately that talks about a dump on a specific application that is 'Not responding' my entire PC freezes, I cannot move the mouse or keyboard, and I have to reset the computer. This can happen when loading windows, when shutting windows down, when browsing the internet, when idle, anytime pretty much

Try opening Task Manager before the system freezes. You can do this twice (once with the Application tab and once with the Processes tab) to see where the problem lies.

Ok, thanks, I'll give that ago.

I don't think it is a hardware issue, but beyond that I just can't work out what the problem could be.

I also want to mention that I have tried the windows repair a few times and everytime I have it locks up.

Does it happen in Safe Mode?

Also, if you have the time that the last freeze occurred (the time on the clock in the system tray) - that'll help to find it in the reports in the above link.

I'm seeing this exact symptom on a new Win7 Pro x64 system. Some folks in that thread gave some good suggestions - none have helped yet, however.

My last system from the same manufacturer has worked flawlessly for years, so I believe it's either a Win7 problem or a mobo issue. It occurred both before and after updating the BIOS, before and after disabling overclocking, before and after updating all video and other drivers, with two different video cards, with and without my USB internet handset installed.

On my system, the symptom has been extremely intermittent - usually once every few days or so - which makes it difficult to test (i.e., I can't just run indefinitely in Safe Mode). At this point it appears to happen only when some external audio hardware is connected, like a Firewire audio interface or a USB audio device (i.e., internet handset), but that may just be coincidence. The longest stretch I've gone w/o a problem has been when no external devices are connected.

I have latest drivers (or Win7's Windows Update drivers) for everything. Right now I am running the system with only the on-board HD audio hardware enabled, and am waiting to see if the problem occurs again.

This is an ASUS P6T SE w/6GB RAM and Core i7 920 CPU; AMI BIOS 0805; ASUS nVidia GTS 250. I've seen quite a few comments online about lockups with the P6T. Obviously that doesn't fit your case, however.

If I learn anything new, I'll post it here.

After spending some time searching, I ran across this and this. Again, it's specific to ASUS boards, but one never knows what others it might be applicable to.

I am trying this fix right now. So far I have used my system intensely with this change and no lockups. I ran it for 12 hours on Saturday with 10 different applications driving both my on-board and AI audio while running multiple animations in numerous windows. All involve lots of disk I/O and Firewire activity. No problems. I also ran the system without issue all day yesterday using the three applications where I typically see this problem (they're the ones I use most anyway, so that's likely just coincidence).

Obviously, much more testing is needed, but last time it only took a day or so of very light use to produce the symptom with my Firewire audio interface connected, so... we'll see.
