How to backup and restore items pinned to Start Menu

I want to be able to backup, and to quickly restore, the items I have pinned to the Start Menu after I restore an image to my c: drive, but it's escaping me how to do it.

    Windows stores the shortcuts here:
C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu", but merely pasting shortcuts there doesn't make them appear in the Start Menu.

I know the favorites in this registry key is involved:
    hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\startpage
but what do the other things there do? I don't want to restore the whole key when all I need is favorites and also restoring the other things in the key might do something I don't want.

What's the best way to handle backing up and restoring the items pinned to my Start Menu?

    Thanks.

Not sure if you've found this yet. If so, maybe it will help someone else. But I just found this site:

Backup and Restore Your Pinned Taskbar Items in Windows 7

    Good Luck.

Surely if you restore an image the pinned items will be restored with it.
