all that you should have to tell him is that there is a group policy that is causing (ur problem) tohappen and to change it for you. He should know how to if he is a good IT guy.

I agree with Karl. You do not want to jeopardize your job by inadvertently damaging a company-owned computer. It is most likely the old Start button was used because it is familiar to the employees and the Admins are attempting to avoid unnecessary questions from employees not familiar with the new icon.
