im not sure if this will work at all but im jst going to put it out there:

would it be possible for us to change any of the beta bootres.dll and then copy it to the retail?

I used Windows 7 Boot Screen for Windows Server 2008 R2 By Developer@Live.IT to repair my bootres.dll from the vista boot progress bar back to the WIN7 boot. It worked prefectly. so i assume there will still be an issue with the digital sig.

btw, any progress with the GUI or any more guides to sign the boot files?

you can try replacing the retail bootres with beta or rc

but i assume since it does sign and hash checks it will also do a version check

Only x64 cares for valid signature.

thnx for the reply. im also trying my own test but like you and the others im just keep hitting dead ends with this stupid Cert sig. But its good to see that M$ are starting to get things right but maybe they could have fixed various other security holes instead of preventing us from changing a simple bmp file. I mean they offically support logon screen changes now so why are they stoping us from something that PC users have been doing since XP's release.

but anyway, like i said im trying to crack this myself and if i get anything ill post ASAP. Also, if anyone that has changed the bootres.dll and are stuck on the vista boot screen. use the Windows 7 boot for Server 2008 tool i posted earlier to repair it.

no x64 only cares about DRIVER signature

all boot files regardless of architecture care about the signature

Well at least it doesn't care enough to prevent the system from booting.

thats true but then the custom logo dosent work so it reverts to vista style boot

if we can basically have a faulty bootres.dll on PURpose to get back to vista style booting and make boot logos the way they did for vista?

basically exploit the legacy boot to use custom boot themes?

I can confirm a successfull boot with animation in bootres.dll, and signed with a non-MS certificate. Works both with and without a timestamped signature, but obviously must have testsigning set on in bcd. I really had a hard time creating new test certificates that worked, so I ended up using an old expired certificate. I was forced to do it inside a virtual machine so that I could set back bios time to before the certificate expiration. Anyways, it looks very promising.

Hopefully someone will publish this "autosigner" soon..
