    Greetings,

yes, Harpua got this right. I fixed this one, when the fix solution was posted on the gadget page. It works, that's all I can tell, but thanks anyway, was good idea posting it here, because I believe, I'm not the only person using this gadget.

    Long live Windows 7.

I signed up trying to reach Harpua, but for some reason I can't figure out how to PM on this site so this will have to do..
Does anyone know whether Harpua's fix will restore one's previous notes or are those essentially gone forever? I really value my notes more than anything else since they are important but not committed to memory (since they are, of course, notes!)..

Well.. if it matters to anyone, I wasn't able to restore my previous notes, which royally blows, but that's that.

ok - here's my story. I had the same issue, i did his solution, and nothing happened at first.. here's what i did after:

    1. right click on your desktop and click "View" then "Show Desktop Gadgets".
all the other ones disappear , then do it again "View" then "Show Desktop Gadgets". it showed up at this time for me with all my notes still in tacked! it did however throw about 20 black - blank note pads on my desktop, i just deleted them. Seems to be working fine now. Win Win for me.

    thanks for the help!

You know what? Did you happen to do that recently after an update?
Because yesterday night I did an update and when I started it up today I had about 10 extra dark notes on my desktop (ones that I had probably previously opened when trying to restore the old one), which probably meant if I had left the problem alone it would have fixed itself and I would still have those!
    Double sigh.

Had the same problem with that gadget after I installed IE9.

    Here's the fix:

Install Notepad++ (free app) if you don't already have it.
    go to "C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar"
    open gadgets folder
open the appropriate gadget folder for the black & dark notes gadget
    open the en US folder
    open the js folder
Edit the "notes.js" and "settings.js" files which are found in the js folder as follows by first opening each file (one at a time) in NotePad++ (referred to above).

For each of these two files use the encoding menu in Notepad++ and set the encoding to "UTF-8 without BOM" and then save each file....

Now simply re-add (re-install) the gadget and everything should be back to normal.

(Don't forget to use the windows key and G to find the still screwed up version of the black and dark notes gadget which should still be lurking on your desktop and remove it.)

    Worked for me.
    Greetings,

thank you for this, I've noticed that earlier on the official page of that gadget.

Good thing is, it worked for me back than, but however now, the gadget went crazy again.

I tried this, in a hope, it would work again and nothing.

I somewhat opened it in NotePad++ and than changed the encoding, but once I open it again, the encoding is back to ANSI, any idea, how to change that encoding for good?
