mmmm.. I did not try the flag sugestion immediatly. Your right. dragging the flag all the way to the right does not work. Dragging it to the left however opens up a customize window where you can drag the flag to and hide it. You can do this to the sound Icon too. Fast and easy. I like it.
Needs documentation. An improvment from gpedit? I think so. Still, you had a point.

Left and Right are relative to it's current location.

i just tried this and no luck. the thing i would like to see even if it means it takes longer to set up the os is when windows first loads after installing it is for each feature that microsoft knows users change is for a dialog box popping up asking you which setting you want.

for example the menu bar is hidden by default and you have the bar that starts with the organize button on it. i would like to see the first time i click organize a pop up explaining this bar, then below that check boxes letting me choose to keep this bar, disable this bar, choose to re-enable the menu bar or enable both bars. personally i would enable the menu bar and disable the bar with organize on it. i find nothing on this bar of use.

thanks. in the 7100 rc "customize notification area" is not in help yet, however with the term notification area i was able to google for a solution. i get that little up arrow back, but i can live with that better than i can the flag.

    run
    gpedit.msc
    user configuration
    administrative templates
    start menu and taskbar
    remove the action center icon

enable "remove the action center icon"

Dragging the flag Icon to my left with a left click, caused a window to open labeled customize... I just dropped it in there. Clicking the little up arrow next to the system tray will open the customize window.

what rc version are you running? in 7100 gpedit was the only way i could get rid of the flag. i had tried the dragging at least 10 times to no avail.
