WAIK Win7 - Initial Build
In anticipation of RTM, I am building my initial custom install of Windows 7 today. I have not created any custom installs since XP, yet I am confident that one aspect of the process remains the same - The Windows setup files and the customization values are distinct entities. You can replace the Windows 7 setup files with different versions without modifying the customization - insofar as the customization does not call a feature unique to the setup files.
This is how you properly/completely relocate system files/folders off of the system drive. I am preparing for my first set of SSDs and I want %USERPROFILES% et al off of the SSD volume(s). I am also quite tired of issues revolving around the relocation of C:\Users\Antman\Desktop.
Another cool thing you can do - replace canned Windows apps with your preferred apps. This is where I replace Notepad with Liquid Ninja's MetaPad (although I also use EditPad Pro), Calc with CalcPlus or PowerCalc, CharMap with CharMap Pro, WordPad with Atlantis. You have to do a bit of file renaming here. Of course, I will rethink some of these as the new canned apps are a bit nicer now, like Calc. Note: You don't need to WAIK to do this part.
Anyone else playing with this for personal use? Corporate use?
I will keep you posted on my progress.
