    Desktop Problems

I am unable to change my desktop background apart from to another solid colour (so I cannot have a picture as my background or change the theme).

I have searched all over for solutions but none of them seem to work. I think it may have to do with me having Windows 7 Ultimate and it not being compatible with the laptop I have (HP Intel Pentium M Processor)

Any suggestions on what I should do?

    Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Posting your systtem specs, and in this case your graphics setup, would be a big help, but it sounds as though you're using Basic settings instead of Aero.

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if your graphics adapter needs updating?

    Thanks for your reply.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but here's what I found:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
    Version: 6.1.7100 Build 7100
    System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: HP Compaq nc6220 (PL814AV)
    System Type: X86-based PC
    Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) M processor 2.13GHz, 2133 Mhz, 1 Core(s), 1 Logical Processor(s)

I hope that's relevant. I don't know exactly where to find graphics settings. I do have Aero but it said my video card driver doesn't support Aero effects. Could that be why I can't change my background?

Hello Djjs, and welcome to Seven Forums.

In addition, double check to make sure that you do not have the Remove background images (where available) option checked in the Ease of Access Center.

Also, double check to make sure that at step 3 in the tutorial below, you have the folder selected that contains the image you want to use for you background, and not the Solid Colors location.

    Hope this helps,

If your video card doesn't support Aero effects then you won't get them. You haven't said which video card you've got, but you could try downloading the latest driver for it just in case.

I think the video card is Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family. Do you have any suggestions for which driver I would need to download and where I might find it?

Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade advisor. It will tell you if your GPU is compatible, and point you towards any solution.

915 and below dont have aero compatible drivers available. The lowest cards for which such drivers are available is 945. Let me also add that NO hack/trick will enable aero on your card so dont waste your time.
