    Windows 7 Ultimate Welcome screen.

I want to change my welcome screen to an image of my choice.
I've checked the YouTube tutorials and so I've made the necessary changes in the registry,System 32, and gpedit.msc. I've followed the instructions.
What I get however is not what I expected.

The changes I made now give me the image I chose but in the closing down screen.
In the welcome screen I get initially black and then white with the word "welcome" in the middle.
This changes fairly promptly into the first of my personalization themes images.
Originally I was getting the Win 7 default screen for welcome and closing down.

Can any one throw some light on this? All the YouTube instructions I followed claimed to change only the welcome screen and some claimed the closing down screen couldn't be changed from the default.
    I've experienced the complete opposite.
My system boots up and closes down quite fast. No problems there.
Any suggestions for the "Wait to kill service" settings?

    hi,

brink made some excellent tutorials, for this

    Log On Screen - Change

if you think this option is better for you, then RESTORE back to before you made the youtube instructions

this may also resolve the slower shutdown. can you see which program is causing the delay

I like this program. LogonStudio: Software from Stardock Corporation There are community created login screens or you can use your own. Just remember that windows will stretch the pic to fit your monitor so the aspect ratio of the photo needs to match that of your monitor as close as possible or it'll look weird.

    Changing logon/off screens

    Thanks for the advice.

I did use the Julian Manici program for quite a while
and it worked fine for me.
I'm sure the new one you've suggested I use would do the same.
They and others like them are built to make life easy for users.

    I however, like to dabble.

As I've said I made the necessary changes in the registry,System 32 and gpedit.msc and ended up
converting my logoff screen from Win 7 default to the 250k jpg image of my choice. The logon/welcome screen didn't change. But I've now made a discovery because of a minor change I made in the

    backgrounds folder. ( Windows/System32/oobe/info/backgrounds/"image.jpg"
Before I started dabbling there were two jpg images in this folder. One was/is the image named backgroundDefault.jpg and the other one was just another 250k jpg file. I removed this jpg file.
So there was only the default image in this folder with the correct name "backgroundDefault.jpg"
Yesterday I put another 250k jpg file back into the backgrounds folder and when I rebooted my PC the welcome screen came up with my chosen image all be it for a short time before changing into the first of my personalization images.

I now want to see this welcome screen of my choice for just a little bit longer.
I'm going to find out how to slow my logon time just a little bit. Most users want to speed it up but my PC is already set for that.

I'm sure my log off screen will still be the one of my choice.
I'm finding this a very interesting learning experience.
