I use Yahoo widgets. They have a very good, customizable calendar, named "Month Calendar", which can be downloaded here: Month Calendar - Yahoo! Widgets And there are other Yahoo widgets which may be useful, like weather, etc. I used Microsoft gadgets until they quit listing them, then found Yahoo Widgets and was pleasantly surprised. They are very non-obtrusive insfar as resource usage.

Don't have desktop widgets?
Every time I right click and try to enter gadgets the cursor spins for half a second and nothing happens. I was able to use desktop gadgets fine with the leaked version of 7, now the official one doesn't have it. Did they take it out?
