    Unfortunately to knock out an animal / human (especially hairy ones) it's very difficult to use the normal masking tools this is why I use Corel PHOTO paint's "cutout lab" you can download the free trial CorelDraw Suite trial and give it a go.
    Here's a tutorial on how it works

    P.S. I'll cut out the puppy in a bit and post it later for those that would like to use it :)

    Wow, that looks so much easier! Is there an option for that in Photoshop?

    I unfortunately only have CS4 which makes it pretty difficult to cut out images but if you have CS5 then there is a new option to cut out images (with hair etc.) *tip try and use as higher res images as you can get for this to work best

    Thanks for that video, Nick. That explains a lot. The only problem I'm having is making the background transparent. I can only turn it into a colour...
