Windows 7: Explorer - Total Filesize

Explorer - Total Filesize

Hi all,

I'm switching now from XP to 7 and I am missing a very important information in the Windos Explorer statusbar:

If you go to any folder, XP shows the size of all the files in this folder on statusbar

On Win 7 you have to select the files to see the total size. If you select more than 15 files you have to click "Show more Details" on the Infobar.
This really sucks.

Is there any way to fix this?

I think M$ has removed this view because users shouldn't think about memory consumption. And usage of RAM. And performance.
It just has to be colorful as much as possible

interesting post.

i never noticed the 15 file limit before..most odd.

this wonderful new feature is actually called the 'infobar' - a 'status bar' still exists, but is off by default, and has sadly been dumbed down to uselessness.

to see just how useless the new status bar is, press 'Alt' while in explorer to bring up the menu bar, then view >> status bar

Thanks a lot for this quick reply!
I have already activated the statusbar - and - it doesn't show the information i need..

Does your statusbar show the total filesize?

I think I'm going to switch back to XP. The only adantage of 7 is for me to access 8GB of Ram.

There are so many problem I have to fight with: 59Hz (see Forum), Bluescreens with Games, missing 32Bit Plugin-DLL support in Explorer, missing 32Bit Explorer (Win Bug), problem with ASIO Driver (Latancy), 2D Acceleration doesn't work properly and so on...

I am going to wait for SP1..

the status bar is useless, as i say. no file size - just number of files.

i am sorry to hear that windows 7 is not working well for you. most of your problems seem driver related.

anyway, good luck with sp1!

Windows Seven

OMG. I've been looking around the net for an hour to find out what i did wrong and why my status bar wasn't showing total file sizes(or even single files) anymore. I thought it was because i turned off thumbnails or messed around with the search indexing stuff(i wanted to get rid of those annoying thumbnails and thumbs.db's).. Why would they even remove this feature? FFS, it's not even a 'feature', it's a basic function like being able to copy and rename files! If i had known about this, i would have stayed on Vista. Also, they add a huge details pane, but that is also just as useless. It only shows total for like 10 files max, and it also takes ageeees to calculate the new file size when you select an extra file! What is the logic behind taking out those details and making it take longer to calculate the file size? Is it related to them changing how the cache or search index and stuff works? Or is it because they made it bloated by adding all those useless tags and ratings and stuff to files now? Do you guys think they will fix this with the final release? Surely people have complained and they have listened? Or at least add the option to have it on in future service packs or something? What's the chances? I'm very very annoyed at this, because i was loving windows 7 until i found this out. Now i'm very very annoyed and disappointed. If i didn't just spend like 6 hours making my OS nice and configuring it(and require another 10 hours to reconfigure VISTA again), i would install vista or XP again just because of this idiotic 'feature'.

Want to transition from Total Commander to Windows Explorer. Any help?
Like a basic tutorial of being a mid-level or little more advanced user of it? Best practices? Not hing special, really, just to replace Total Commander as a general file manager. (Which means, how to best do the two panel things with the Windows Explorer layout?) OK, maybe 2 things: 1)...

How do I get Explorer Status bar to display total file size?
This problem is very annoying. In Windows XP when I open a folder, a music folder for example, it would display the total number of files in the folder and the total file size. Windows 7 does not do this, which is fine, I thought, I'll just highlight all the files with Ctrl+A, doesn't work, I...

Windows 7 keeps changing my pictures!! (filesize & modified date)
This one has been driving me crazy. It seems that Windows likes to modify my jpg files!! Modified date and filesize seems to change on its own, perhaps something to do with the thumbnail view in Explorer. Any ideas why this happens and how I can stop it happening? Cheers zambz
