That's one of the most widely used photoshop technique, Jaidyn !
First, make a elliptical selection over your design, in a different layer

Hold shift, and drag gradient, from the top to teh bottom of teh selection

There should be an option in User CP -> Edit Options -> Default Subscription Thread Mode. What setting have you got there?
