I am running x64, follow the steps and it doesn't work..
I copied the imageres.dll to desktop, modified it by reshack, and boot the system by XP. Open window7's drive, copy and paste the file from desktop to system32. However, when I boot my computer by windows7, I receive the error "Window Explorer has stopped working" ( Problem Signature: Event Name APPCRASH ) and asking me to restart the program. I can hear the modified sound once I click restart. But it is annoying since I have to click it every time..

    Any help is appreciated.

Why You have to hack or regedit for change of startup sound!?! Just go to personalization - sounds and change whatever sound You like.

I have not done it through xp, just Windows 7

Did you rename the imageres.dll to imageres.old then copy and paste the new hacked imageres.dll into C:\windows\system32 directory
or did you just copy/paste it into the system32 directory. Try it as I have above and see if that makes a difference.

yeah, I tried to rename & paste and replace, but both ways don't work..
With the new dll, I don't receive the APP CRASH error if I unchecked "Play Windows Startup sound" tho
I am not sure where is my problem....
My wave file is only 240kb..

Did you use the reshack program I gave link too for X64 windows> Not sure if that will make difference or not.

Also using the take ownership file works great. Then no problems at all.

Just trying to help pinpoint your problem.

Here is tutorial a little neater I think

Startup Sound - Change in Windows 7

Change startup sound in windows 7
How to Change Start up sound in Windows 7 This assumes you are using American English versuion of W-7 Language type 1033
All Windows 7 allows is for you check or un-check play start up sound in Windows 7 you have to do the following to change the default sound of your choice

    1) Use the following beta program Reshacker from
Download Resource Hacker 3.5.0.82 Beta / 3.4.0.79 - Analyze, change, add, erase or extract resources in EXE and DLL files - Softpedia

    2) Locate the file "imageres.dll" in C:\ Windows\System32 folder. For instance, C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll. Copy that file into a different location, i.e. your desktop.

    3) Download ResHacker .

    4) Open ResHacker. Open the imageres.dll file in ResHacker.

    5) Find the folder that reads "WAVE" and expand everything below that.

    6) Right click 1033 (this could have a different name depending on your locale), and click Replace Resource. Click "Open file with new resource", and find the wave file you want to replace it with. Once you're done, in Resource Type, type "WAVE", in Resource Name type "5080", and under Resource Language type "1033" (or whatever number you have). Once done, click Replace.

    7) Click File, then click Save. Now you can copy this file to Vista's System32 folder.

Keep the imageres_original.dll file ResHack left behind in case you want to revert back to the original sound.

    8) For Windows 7 go back to C:\Windows\System32 directory rename the imageres.dll to Imageres.old then copy and paste the new hacked Imageres.dll into C:\windows\system32 directory

Now I used this reshacker instead as I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/reshack_setup.exe

I also downloaded the 'Take Ownership' file from our forums here - Take Ownership Shortcut

I then took ownership of the imageres.dll in System32 folder, so I could change the extension to .old
That way I was able to copy the new imageres.dll file into that folder.

This worked perfectly for me then
upon following these steps and a restart, I know have an issue on the log in screen. No user/password box appears or sound, just shows the background but nowhere to sign in. Right before this happened the laptop installed some updates.

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated

    O_O

    Startup sound, or logon sound?

If it's your logon sound, then just go System>Sounds

If it's your startup sound, then I think it's more than just editing your imageres.dll file
But I'm not sure, I don't do much mod work with 64-bit Windows, it's just a pain in my arse.

Ugh... man, I'm seriously lost... This is killing me...
I followed everything down to the last punctuation mark...
I have reshacker. I have the "take ownership" option. I used the "take ownership" option on the imageres.dll file and all I have to do is change the permissions around to give the user, me, full control. I have an issue though :\ with my computer, when I go to change permissions, it shows two users even though there's one. The users have the same name, but one says "<not inherited>" while the other says "C:\Windows\System32". The "<not inherited>" one has full control while the windows one doesn't. >_< any ideas as to why that is?
Oh and I DID change the name of the original file to "imageres.old" and I tried to save the other file in the folder and it said it couldn't replace it. I also tried dragging and dropping which failed. My computer keeps automatically changing it back to the original state somehow. I check it with reshack and it plays the same sound as before even though I edited it.

I am not sure why so many have problems. I have found another tutorial, and not sure if it would help you or not.
