How to Add Program Icons to the Notification Area?

Many programs add their own icons to the Notification Area, Others never do it, but sometimes it is convenient.

I have been searching for a long time for how to add an icon to a couple of programs, and couldn't find a tutorial here. Almost all have icons included with their executive files, so maybe it won’t be very difficult to add one clickable icon. Any idea of how to do it, please?

The notification icons are special icons defined by the software. If the software wasn't developed to provide a notification icon, none will be shown by Windows. You can't "add" an icon to the notification area unless the software provides for the option. There are specific guidelines for this area and that's why it's small.

There's other methods of creating clickable icons for the start menu, task bar quick links and desk top. Knowing more about what you're trying to accomplish would help define the best place to start.

Thank you carwiz. I understand, and that's maybe why with so many Notification Area and Taskbar tutorials and a couple on the Not Area, there is not one on this otherwise useful subject. The icons there are hidden. I have already displaced the Quick Launch to close to that, but the Not Area would be better.

Yes tman69, the icons would appear on that window linked from the Customize... on the Not Area.

    Thanks anyway.

I found a way to place any program icon on the taskbar icon tray. It is not the same as in this thread, but it does put the icons there when we ant to. I post it here because it can help anyone searching for the same. I found this small application named RBtray at Souceforge.

    I use TrayIt!

to put programs icons in the systray aka "notification area".
I just wish I could get the icons closer together, like they are in XP.

Thanks Oven Master, that's another good idea. It seems that there are a few of them after all even if it took me months to find one.
