Control Panel Icons
Does anyone know where the icons that are used in the Control Panel are located within the OS?

Hello Stoj,
They are located in the CLSID keys in the registry. The tutorial below is for Vista, but the method is the same with the icons that have the same name. I need to get started on a separate one for Windows 7 soon to have the different names listed as well.
Removed link, use the one below instead.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok Stoj,
Here's the tutorial to change the Windows 7 Control Panel icons fresh out of the oven. :)
Control Panel - Change Default Icons
Very Useful Thank you!
One more question. What if I would like those Icons to save a jpg or something. Is this possible?
You could try the free icoFX, open the icon delete all but the 256x256 image and hit save as and hopefully you can save it as a png, if you don't se the option then try to manually enter the extension when saving it.
I haven't tried with that particular program but as it's free I thought it would be worth a shot, I actually have Axialis IconWorkshop and that method works for me when I want turn the ico into a png.
You're welcome Stoj.
You can also use the free program IconViewer to add a Icons tabs to files that contain a icon library in them. Most of Windows 7 icons are in the "C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll" file. You can open it's properties and click on the new Icons tab to select a icon and save it as either a .ico, .bmp., or .png. You can then easily convert say a .bmp to a .jpg in Paint ("C:\Windows\system32\mspaint.exe").
