Windows 7: Windows 7 - Default Profile. How can I edit it?

09 Feb 2010   #81

Windows 7 Enterprise

Follow these steps (brief instructions for Advanced users):
  1. Clean install of Windows 7.
  2. Create the first user and this will be used as the new Default profile.
  3. Once logged in as the first user personalize your theme and save the theme for sharing.
  4. Apply the default Windows 7 Aero theme and delete unsaved themes.
  5. Apply the saved theme from step 3.
  6. Open the registry and goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders.
  7. Delete all values except (Default) and !Do not use this registry key.
  8. Enable the built-in Administratator account.
  9. Continue setting up the first users profile and when finished reboot and login with the built-in Administrator account that you enabled in step 8.
  10. Once logged in as Administrator enable show hidden files and system files.
  11. Rename the hidden Default profile to Default - Copy (or anything else other than Default).
  12. Create a copy of the first users profile used in steps 2~9 and rename this to Default.
  13. Create a new user account then login with this new user and check that the new Default profile settings have applied correctly.

Is there still no official way to handle the profiles in a practical manner? We're nearing the time frame where we want to mass deploy Windows 7, yet the profile situation is the one thing holding us back.

We are even starting to consider other operating systems in the mix as a result.

Still very disappointed in MS for not making this a little more logically set up...

Roasted you are spot on! ( and have the patience of a saint )
Why is this task so hard? I too have been looking for this answer to this issue(Feature?) for Weeks.
Why can't any of the "MS Advocates" here give a solution (That WORKS)?
Configuring a Default Profile should at least POSSIBLE!
I don't really care if the process is convoluted as long as i can get there in the end.

NutsInAViceToo - Yeah man. I didn't think it was that hard of a concept. You'd think Microsoft of all corporations in the world would be the one who would retain this feature. But here I am with time passing, my deadline coming nearer... and yet I'm still no closer.

Come on, Microsoft... let's hear an answer...

WOW. September of 2009 is how long I've been researching this? Are you absolutely kidding me?

Dear Microsoft. I'd like a solution to my problem before Windows 14 comes out. Thanks in advance.

I too was looking for a solution as a home user with multiple family members using the same computer.

In the process I found this link. It appears somewhat different than any solution provided so far.

I cannot vouch for it as I am green in this but check it out for yourself.

Windows 7

hmm forgive me for opening this old thread and bad english. im just a it student here.
I read, well mostly skimmed trough all pages. but none said something about this problem i have.

My current situation.
I did some research about windows 7 deployment. after a week bashing my head i finally got it to work.
i created a custom image. burned it to dvd now i have a custom installation.
what i did was rename the default profile to administrator and administrator to default.
so when i created a new profile it had all settings + custom background. even managed to automate the installation MS office and adobe with a script.
so all great right. just have a few simple clicks and it installs perfectly. i dont have to personalize everything anymore.

now the problem.
I joined this custom installation to a domain.
but now i cant logon with a domain user.
"saying userprofile service failed to logon.
profile cannot be loaded"

so it has something to do with the default profile not working properly. as it cannot generate a default profile.
i confirmed this with having a a clean windows 7 without touching the default profile i joined to domain and i can logon with a domain user.

anyone has any idea what i can do here..
i read countless of sites now. it just makes me dizzy. i could keep on reading but instead ill just ask for help.:)

Oops nevermind lol sorry for the double post.
i forgot to manually create an user account on the local computer. that would allow me to login with a domain user.

now im in the phase of testing. what rights i can give to the normal users that will login.
