    "Change Icon" Box Grayed Out


    Good Day All !!!

    I have a few desktop icons (shortcuts) I'd like to change. I used to be able to right click on the icon, hit "Propertys", then "Change Icon". On some on my shortcuts that "Change Icon" box is grayed out. I've researched for hours and can't figure it out. I'm running Windows 7 as an administrator. Under the security tab all users (System, Steve, and Administrators have "Full Control". One of the icons is the Windows Explorer icon that is pinned to the task bar. The other icons are programs I installed.

    Any ideas ???? Thanks !!!

    Hello Smeyers,

    You might see if creating new shortcuts directly from the .exe files of these programs may allow you to change the icons of the new shortcuts. I've noticed some program like Office do not let you change the shortcut icons of the ones it created by default during the program's installation.

    Yippee !!!


    Brink... I created shortcuts right to the exe files as you had suggested. On all the icons I did that to, the grayed out "Change Icon" changed to black, and I was able to turn some ugly icons into more pleasing ones!

My old MS Outlook 7 starts on a calendar, but I need it to begin on Contacts. So went onto Tools/Options, Other/ Advanced, and saw the word "Calendar" for "Startup screen" That, though, was grayed out, and I can't change it to "Contacts" (or anything else). Any way I can get it to brighten?? ...
Specifically this icon
In Windows 7, all the good icons are in %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll, but we're still taken to the old SHELL32.dll when it comes time to change an icon. Is there a registry key or something that we can change to remedy this?
Hey guys, I managed to change my default icons to blue ones. They show great in List view but when I switch to the Large Icons view, thumbnails show preview in Yellow(original) icon, is there way to change them as well? http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6015/50470821.th.jpg
