Disable Windows Search Box
Hi,
Is it possible to disable the search box in Windows Explorer without disabling Windows Search? That box is so ugly and intrusive that it makes me afraid to use Explorer at all.

Apparently not. According to our intrepid tutorial maker it's all or nothing. (See the Warnings.)
Windows Search - Turn On or Off
Around 1996 a group of Microsoft developers got together and created a bunch of unofficial "PowerToys" One of those toys was Tweak UI which allowed users to customize the Windows user interface and advanced settings. Many changes were possible and most were not provided within the operatins system itself.

So, yes, I would tend to agree with you. There might be a way to accomplish what you're looking for by tweaking Windows 7. Unfortunately, it might also require the use of a 3rd party app or utility since it's not officiallly sanctioned or offered by Microsoft. And because of this Forum's rule # 6 all I can suggest is you could try some innovative googling.

Thanks for the reply.
What does that rule have to do with my question? I am not trying to hack anyone! Besides, this forum has a tutorial for removing the Explorer toolbar, and the method doesn’t look too "official" to me. So how is the Explorer search box any different?
Window Explorer Toolbar - Remove
Hi

Scroll down the list and uncheck the box next to Windows Search
Then Click YES and then OK
You will get a message to restart the system
Reboot and See
Hello Rand,
Sorry, but it's an all or none setting to remove the Search box in Windows Explorer.
One alternative is to use a 3rd party file explorer program like Explorer++ or FreeCommander instead of Windows Explorer.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn
Classic Shell has an option to hide the Search box from the Explorer title bar. Works in Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
