    Start Button Window

When I click the Start button, the start menu appears with selected programs for, I guess, quick access. How do I control which programs appear there? How do place Windows Update there? Thanks.

Open All Programs, left click on desired program and then right click on program and choose pin to start menu or taskbar or both depending.

It's a great feature and one I use regularly especially the taskbar.

How do I prevent programs that I use from appearing in the start menu? Programs I use seem automatically to be pinned to the start menu. I'd like my start menu to include only programs that I so designate.

there is good info here on how many shortcuts you can show on the taskbar.
and how to clear the most recent used ones from the list.

I see one can customize the start menu, add and remove programs, but how do I adjust the start menu's size? I see nothing in the control panel or in the start menu part of the start menu that allows changing the start menu's size, and the cursor doesn't change to drag its borders. Thanks.

It depends on what you have pinned and what you have showing on the right side.
Look at this tutorials on the start menu.

    Start Menu - Change Height

    Start Menu - Customize

Start Menu - Pin or Unpin a Program to
