    How can I rearrange the files within a folder?


    I recently switched from Windows XP to Windows 7, and overall it seems like a better operating system. The one thing that has really bothered me so far is the inability to arrange files as I see fit. In XP I could drag and drop music/pictures/videos/documents/folders wherever I wanted them, and they were just the same when I visited them again; it was great for keeping things organized. In Windows 7 however, I can only have them in a set order (alphabetic, by size, by date, etc.). So far I've gotten around this by prefixing each file with a number so they're in the desired order while still conforming to the alphabetic rule, but it would take a very long time to sort all of my things this way. Is there a piece of software I could use to tweak the OS and fix this problem? If there is, it's not forthcoming in google searches. Thanks to anyone who lends me their time and knowledge.

    This is one of the features removed in Windows 7. I don't know why. I am not aware of any means of adding this feature.

    Hello blatherskythe, and welcome to Seven Forums.

    If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to disable auto arrange to be able to arrange files in a folder in any order and position you like. This doesn't work in libraries though.
