User Profile My Docs, Pics, favorites moved via Location Moveturnedbad
Hello..
I'll try to keep this as simple as I can. A server I work with has users on it. They each have a shared drive that is their own personal drive to store files on. (It's a folder on the server but appears as a Drive location under network locations say Z) So I was asked that the users store their My Documents and other files on the server. I was told by a coworker that you can move the folder on the local pc and store My Doc and such via the Location tab.. So I moved it to drive Z.. (Z:\My Documents for example) I moved a few others from their profiles via their personal pc and then said oh I said oh their Favorites can be moved so they can log in on any pc and have it show up.. so moved to Z:\ because Favorites appeared to be a file.. turns out when you move it.. it dumps every bookmark as a shortcut and now that Z:\ has been renamed Favorites but still Z:\.. and everything in Z shows up under IE favorites in IE.... so i attempted to backtrack and restored things back to they were.. the first attempt went back with restoring favorites first.. the last thing i should have done.. when reverted Favorites deletes that folder (Z) on the server and the user doesn't have a network drive now.. Ok a coworker recreated a Z drive but it seems on some users profiles a App Data folder was also transferred (not by me somehow windows did it) .... So I have already reverted everything except for Favorites and that App Data folder that showed up... Any thoughts? Do we need to just recreate that folder to fix it? Do i need to try to revert the app data folder? i'm unsure how that appeared. |

Sometimes when User folders are moved they lose their User folder icon or Location tab used to restore the default location as shown in Option One of User Folders - Restore Default Location - Windows 7 Forums. In this case Option Two always works to restore the User Shell folder if you follow the steps closely.
If you moved the entire User Profile which is the only way I can see that AppData might also be moved, then to restore it follow the restoration steps provided in User Profile - Change Default Location. If you run into any problems with these restorations, ask for help from the tutorial's author in its Comments section. Favorites is a normal User folder which just happens to contain the IE Favorites shortcuts and is moved or restored just like any other with no effect on the contents. Hope this helps. If not let us know more about your specific issue. |

Look at option two, step 7 of this tutorial: User Folders - Change Default Location See what info is in the field just above the button named Move. Do this on the computer with the AppData folder that you have questions about. Follow the steps in that tutorial to move/correct these folders to the desired location. edit: Doh! I type too slow :-) |

well, my superiors requested that i relocate the user data back to it's original location so I used the restore to original location option on each computer for My Docs, Pictures, Etc, the very last one I did on each machine was Favorites.. this removed the shared drive then.. I then proceeded to recreate the shared drive on the server, gave it proper security settings so each user got permission back to each of their individual folders.. on next login the folders were restored correctly so they were visable and useable by the users.. Next on each user's machine Favorites had to be renamed as it took the original server folder's name which was each user's login, so they had to be renamed Favorites.. Then I proceeded to use the Move option once again but only moved My Docs, Pictures, My Vids, and excluded Favorites..
My coworkers stated they only wanted the main documents saved to the server like My Documents.. if they want everything they would just set it up as a roaming profile. So after a bit of running around to each pc it was resolved. |

Glad to hear that the issues have been solved...
...but: Don't they let you use a remote control app*? *recites this mantra: Walking around is a good thing. Walking around is a good thing. Walking around is a good thing. :-) |

Moving profile folders (docs, pics, etc.) via command line? For a variety of reasons, I like moving profile folders to a separate drive. Currently, I do this using the procedure found here but that's GUI-based and I'd like to be able to automate it. Does anyone know if there's a shell command that can accomplish this task? I don't want to just robocopy it... |
