Glad to hear that it's sorted. Slatybart did most of the work so credit to him!

Logging off/ on works for me but that wasn't tested using different themes.
You're welcome, that's why we're members on SevenForums - to help people resolve issues they can't resolve.

I'm also glad that you were able to customize Windows to suite your preferences.

It was a team effort, Callender started you off by pointing to the registry keys and continued testing, I followed up with some things, and damando25 did all the work.

Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer and a restart is a sure way to make certain changes get applied.

    Well done!

edit: If you're satisfied with the solution, please mark your thread Resolved - thanks.

So, I have successfully changed the window color for the regedit and text color (which I love!) and the text color for my other windows and libraries as seen below, but I'm still having trouble getting the background from white to black. I've attached the txt file with from the bat.file Slartybart posted. Didn't want to play any further without asking for advice. The only downside of changing the color I've seen (just testing) was that MS word is also affected (black background, purple text). Anyway, any guidance is appreciated.

I really want to change the background color of Windows (the white is too bright). But having read through this thread, it seems like the only way to do it is to use a "basic" or "classic" Windows theme, and I absolutely hate those themes. I just want the normal Windows 7 look with a different background color instead of white - is there no way to do this?

I did not do it as described in this thread. I found a shellstyle.dll [universal shellstyle] on deviantart which allows me to alter the background and other colours using the personalization colours dialogue with the inbuilt colour picker which makes it far easier.
I wish I could find something similar for win 10 because win 10 is totally unusable by me as it is and dark mode is a joke. I have not found themes very usable TBH on Win 7 or Win 10 despite trying many themes none work well for me. I always go back to the standard Win 7 Aero theme with the universal shellstyle so that I can alter the colours to my preference.

The download link was dead the first time I tried it but it worked on my second try therefore try twice.
You need to replace the shellstyle.dll in your themes folder ie Aero etc. You will need to figure out how to do that, change to a different theme before attempting to replace the original shellstyle.dll AND MAKE A BACKUP before replacing it.
A system file check will replace it so you will need to replace it if you need to use sfc.
