Folder Icons are broken in Windows 7 Explorer – I think I am close

The Folder Icons on my daughter’s laptop are broken in Windows Explorer.
    -icons01.jpg
    She’s running:
Dell Laptop, Windows 7 Pro 64bit
We moved her from an old Alienware Laptop so we don’t have a restore point

Here’s what I did…I’ve almost got it, but need a last bit of help
1)Ran sfc scan on her machine
2)I have a similar Dell Laptop running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit as well.
I copied the imageres.dll files from my (good) machine onto her machine
We did this for both the system32 directory and the SysWow64 directory
    This was successful.
3)I deleted the thumbnail cache on her machine
4)I rebuilt the icon cache on her machine and rebooted
    5)This was tried 2x
    It didn’t work

    One more piece of Information.
If I manually go to one of her folders in windows explorer with a broken Icon and:
right click the icon à Customize Tab à Change Icon… à and then change the “Look for icons in this file:” path

    from: %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

    to: %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll

It fixes the problem for that individual folder….that folder only.
That is why the icon is correct for the apps folder in the image.

    Thanks!

I think it's better if you just let Windows repair itself. Follow this tutorial to do a Repair Install.

Thanks Skyred that makes sense. Unless something else a little less involved comes up, I will go that route.

    Hi Skyred
Here's what I ended up doing:

Folder Icon - Change Windows 7 Default Folder Icon

I found a Shell Icons folder had been added into my Explorer entries...
In regedit I deleted both the Shell Icons folders (32 and 64 bit areas). Exited and,
    Deleted the Thumbnail cache
    Rebuilt the Icon cache
Rebooted, and the Icons were fixed.
    Thanks for the help.
