    Hi garbanzo,

Remove the gadget. Disable Firewall. Add the gadget. If it connects, it's a firewall configuration issue.

    Cheers!

I've had the same problem with vista before but it turned out to be a firewall config issue. I tried adding the weather gadget before replying and even changed different cities, no problem with me.

I'd be very interested to know what's causing this to malfunction. Please let us know if you've figured it out.

Oh, have you tried disabling anti-virus and anti-malware programs too? Just an after thought

yes i tried. i'm running nod32. i checked on the settings and the sidebar gadgets are in the trusted zone with full communication allowed. i even tried disabling the firewall altogether, but it didn't do anything.

Just right-click the gadget & click Options and change the location to somewhere else. OK that. It should now work. Then do the same thing to change it back again. Not sure why that happens but it's occurred several times here.

    Here's something that might work
Click on start and type regedit
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings
On the right window create A New DWORD(32 Bit Value) with name “AllowElevatedProcess”
    and set value as “1”.
    Close Registry Editor
    Restart

ex_brit - if only it were that simple!

that's the first thing i tried. i just get a 'location not found' message that pops up immediately. it does not even try to search..

nosferatux - i already run sidebar elevated since i don't like having UAC turned on...

Please try this out on an elevated command prompt
    cd "%programfiles%\Windows Sidebar\"
    regsvr.exe wlsrvc.dll

If this still doesn't workout for you, please try the patched version here and here
It's also an interesting read :)
