On the start menu, type Desktop Gadget Gallery in the search bar, it should open up the gadget viewer. Look through all the pages and check and see if the gadget has installed, sometimes I have a problem with certain gadgets not starting properly and I have to start them by hand. If you find it in the list, just right click on the gadget and choose add.

If it didn't install and you don't see it in the list, you can install it manually using Winrar, or any other program that will acces zip files. Extarct the .gadget install file from the zip file that you downlaoded to a test folder, change the extension of the .gadget file to .zip. Then you need to create a folder with the name of the gadget in either C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\ or in C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets. Once you create the folder you want in the gadgets directory, open the gadget .zip file in Winrar and extract the contents to the folder you created in the Gadgets directory. It should then appear in the gadet viewer. I hope that helps.

I have a problem too: I go to MS' gadget page, select a gadget. At the install page I hit the correct button, but nothing is downloaded and the new gadget is not on gadget page, nor is it in the C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets directory with the others.

    Where has it gone?

copy the new gadget into this folder :)

As I said, the gadget isn't being downloaded, so I cannot copy it (?)

Shell? Nothing like that on my start menu, nor does it work at the command prompt.

Come to think of it Windows-7 Professional doesn't even appear to have a "Run" box!

Thanks, but the folder is empty.

I must repeat yet again, nothing is downloaded when I press the "install" button on the Gadgets web page.

The problem is probably not one of installing but of downloading!

That will install, but nothing else will.

I downloaded a net meter from a non-MS site, but that will not install.

I unzipped the file, copied the .gadget file to C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets (where all the other gadgets reside), double-clicked it, install, OK, but it does not install and does not appear in the gadgets window. I also put it in the empty directory \Jim\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets and did the same, but it did not install.

The latter directory is offered by shell:gadgets, but there's nothing in it. All the default gadgets which came with the OS are in the c:\Program Files ... path.

I'm totally confused as to why Doc Brown's clock would install but not the net meter!
