    Restrict yourself from accidently messing up the taskbar.

    Hello fellow Windows users,

    Given that I like to modify everything of my interface,
    I've found ease in doing so with the Registry,

    However, I'd really like to disable the rearrangement of already placed
    and properly arranged icons on my taskbar, thus I'd like to restrict myself
    from accidentally dragging such a pinned program icon to a different place,
    in my carefully put together sequence of pinned program icons on my taskbar.

    in this key :

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    I've tried to create and set (with the desired value), the following dword values in my registry :

    LockTaskbar
    NoSetTaskbar
    TaskbarSizeMove
    NoTrayContextMenu

    All those actually did what they were supposed to do, providing the values 0 or 1.

    Then for the actual purpose of my searches, I created and set up ;

    NoCloseDragDropBands
    NoMovingBands

    But both don't seem to enable or disable my ability to drag and rearrange the icons on my taskbar.

    Thus my question is (/are) ;

    Which dword values could restrict my ability to drag and rearrange my taskbar icons (my pinned programs) or how should I lock those icon positions?

    Also, in addition, I'd like to know whether there are some dword values to specifically disable pinning and/or unpinning programs to the taskbar?

    I'd rather not touch the Local Machine keys, however I'm so far not convinced that I should,
    given that other modifications to the CurrentUser keys all worked as expected,
    my knowledge on keys and dword values might just be too insufficient here,
    either way, if you know what I should do or could do, please let me know.

    Kind Regards
      My Computer

    Restrict yourself from accidently messing up the taskbar. {SOLVED}

    I've found a way to do this, to disable yourself from pinning or deleting pinned apps from the taskbar.

    ---

    The actual shortcuts are saved in :
    C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
    {Explorer}
    But the information on their locations and such data, is stored in :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband
    {Registry}

    In which the Taskband 'folder' is your registry key.
    (I thought the content were called the 'keys', apparently the key is the actual folder)

    'Registry keys are container objects similar to folders. Registry values are non-container objects similar to files.' - wikipedia

    ---

    Figuring that for instance in Google Chrome, you can disable the further storing of history,
    by setting its history file (in AppData) to read-only, I figured that perhaps this could be done in a similar way.

    Thus I right clicked the key 'Taskband' (in the left pane of the registry) and clicked 'Permissions',
    in there I set all the 'users' (SYSTEM included) to Deny (click both squares in the 'Deny' column).

    And then if you click OK, you can try pinning and unpinning from the taskbar, and it won't work,
    but the current ones stay unaltered, and right click gives the 'pin to taskbar' option,
    but it won't do anything.

    Thus in fact this does exactly the thing I wished for it to do.
    So far I've encountered no problems with this modification,
    and if you'd like to enable the ability for pinning again,
    just go back to permissions of the 'Taskband' key,
    (which now has seemingly nothing but a standard value in its content),
    and undo what you did. (the previous values will be visible again as they were)

    Given that you still keep your permissions (never change those though) to alter the registry,
    you can thus easily change the permissions of this key even if you're not permitted to alter what the key stores, which is of course logical and safe fortunately.

    This is how you can lock and keep yourself or others from altering the taskbar pinned programs.

    Kind Regards
