How to put app icon at desired spot on taskbar without squirming?

I'm not sure I have the terminology right, but I'm referring to the "bar" at the bottom of the desktop where you can put the icons of those applications you want to be able to start by clicking once (rather than double-clicking). I'm not sure it's called the taskbar/task tray, since that's (also?) the name where small icons of active apps/processes are shown.

Anyway, I've spent 15 wasted minutes trying to place an icon in the spot I want it to go, but no matter how slowly and carefully I inch it along, it either ends up staying in the original place OR the next-left icon squirms past it and ends up in it's place! Note that I've already placed the icon on the tray/bar, I'm just trying to put it (and the rest) in the order I want them to be shown.

Is there some trick to do this, such as disable the irritating icon squirming?

    Thanks!

    Hi Thenin,

Have you tried removing the icon from the taskbar and pinning the original .exe icon to the taskbar [but rename it though].

    I hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for your reply, Paul!

Unfortunately, that didn't help. I have no problem at all adding the icon to the taskbar. Instead, the problem I'm having is that I cannot get it into the exact, desired position between two other icons. As I very slowly inch the desired icon to the left of one so that I never cross over, it NEVER changes position. But if I move the icon to the right of the desired one very slowly to the left, it will either NEVER change position OR it will move two icons to the right!

    Dammit, Microsoft!
