Turning off auto-arrange when "group by type" is checked.

In Windows 7 even if you have auto-arrange turned off, it "turns on" again when you select "Group by type" in a folder. You can put folders in the order you want when it's turned on. Is there any registry edit to disable auto-arrange when "Group by type" is checked?

That's not it sorry, in fact I believe I already applied that when I installed Windows 7. That doesn't effect anything when you have "group by ___" selected. You can't even arrange temporarily, as in before you leave the folder and return. They're locked in place.

That's because group by item type is an auto arrangement.

Yeah but I'm asking if I can move things around and have them stay there within the categories they are placed in with, say, a registry edit.

That would go against the purpose of auto arrangement. You either want Windows to handle placement of your icons or you want to do it manually.

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see...
